A friend of mine has a sealed box that he made himself out of 3/4" MDF and he's wondering what all it would take to change his sealed box into a ported box and actually sound good.

Depends on whether or not he wants tube or slot port, and what the enclosures volume is. IF its to small then it wont matter how much your port it cause it would be to small.

Well, basically your TRUNK is a sealed box, and having a ported box inside your "sealed box" would sound better, the sub usually tells you the recommanded size of box, and you can port it however way u want

No your trunk does not act as a sealed enclosure, the only way this works is if you make it a sealed enclosure for either a free air sub setup or for a set of speakers.
As for the ported slot ports are the best.

Hence the reason for 1" think lexan for pure spl vehicles, and extra 100-200lbs of weight from sound deadening, or in some cases concrete.

Best way is to measure the volume and then determine what you want it ported to, then get the required amount of tube and drill the hole in the top and mount the tube.
