If one changes the oil in a car and doesn't drive it for a year, will the oil still be ok?

Thanks,
Rob Roy

There are varying opinions on this. The oil, when heated and in contact with the metal parts of the engine, will likely become contaminated, the detergents may start to break down, etc.

My input: It costs about $30 for an oil change. That is very inexpensive maintenance if you weigh the risk of damaging the engine from old, less effective oil. Have the oil and filter changed.

If you have not driven the vehicle, condensation is your biggest enemy. Heating and cooling of engine causes moisture droplets to form and they will fall into the oil. Even just ambient temperatures will cause this to happen. s shorod stated, cost of oil change is chep insurance.

i recientally had the same question for my parents car, only to find out that if you dont spend the 12 bucks (if you do it yourself) to replace the oil, you are looking at some expensive repairs. I dont remember exactally what broke but i do remember the quote was somewhere around $2000 to fix it
