Fujimi Porsche 964

Turns out I actually can finish something!

http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/9390/96407xw5.jpg

This is Fujimi's 964 Turbo. The box says "New Porsche 911 Turbo". As there have been Turbo 993s, 996s, and now 997s, it's really not all that new anymore. :grinno: I got this one on Ebay a few years back (2000ish?). At the time I thought I was buying a 993 Turbo- the box art shows the car from the rear, and at the time I was sure 'new' couldn't refer to a 964. So when I got it I wasn't thrilled about it, and it went straight onto the pile. My cat (who was a kitten then, thankfully she's mellowed some since) appreciatively chewed the box corners. Time moved on.

Then a year or so ago, a good friend managed to score for me a kit I've been looking for since before I got this one- the elusive Revell BMW 850i (thanks again mate- your brakes are almost done!). I started planning to do epic battle with it (I admit, I'm slightly intimidated), and got a bottle of CobraColors Porsche Arena Red Metallic in preparation.

One day in early October in a fit of frantic frenzy, I grabbed the tattered 964 box off the pile, ripped into it and started the bodywork. I had to start something (it had been that kind of week), and I reached for the closest easy curbside kit that I had paint for. I easily get 2+ builds out of a bottle of CobraColors lately, and had concluded that this color would look perfect on the 964.

It's built almost entirely out of the box. I added Klutz style carpets and not much else- theres no machined aluminum on it at all. The kit built up very easily- the only real problem was that the wheel stumps wouldn't fit into the brake discs. Fortunately a quick spin on the lathe easily fixed the wheel stumps (I didn't say there was no machining on this one). Otherwise, good litle kit- would make a fine first build.

It's probably the best paint job I've done yet. I'm really happy with how it looks. I used just under an ounce of paint, and alot of reducer. I'm looking forward to doing the 850 with the rest of it. Damnit I miss CobraColors (Come back Leon, I need more!!).

See, it's a Turbo- decal on the butt sez so. She got junk in the trunk!

I had alot of fun building this one. I love doing full engine builds, but curbsides can be great too. Why do I have so few?

It's nice to see I can put something out in less than three months. Tis is actually the first time I've posted anything in the 'Completed' section. It's nice, I'll have to try it more often. But for now, back to the machine shop....

Thanks for looking!

that is a beautyfull model ! color is original for a Porsche but gives all its effect to the model.

I probably missed something...
"I added Klutz style carpets"
could you give me a clue ? :)

they seems real on the rear of the car, excellent !

Sorry about that, it's probably not very obvious. Stevenski came up with a cool idea for how to do carpeting a couple of months ago. It involves cutting pieces of double sided carpet tape to shape, and applying the flocking to the tape. He wrote a How-to on it here (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=554434).

See, if you put your lathe aside ...
But then how would I get the wheels on?

Do I take it Sir, you mean that anything that is "Klutz style" by definition should not look real???!!!

Hi MPWR,

G R E A T    !!!!

The finish is fantastic !! Looks real with the flat black window trim, wing surrounding :ylsuper: :ylsuper:.

The only thing I don“t like so much are the door-opener, because there is no hole between them and the door :eek7:

Great finish Andy, love the black you use for the trim, very authentic. You could have spun some bigger rims off on the lathe though hey, typical under sized Fujimi effort!

It's nice to make a quick-build once in a while when you get too tangled up in all the detail work.
Nice paint I must say! I love the 964 body. Not too often you get to see this kit being built.
It is a shame Fujimi did't make a better cup-wheel for their porsches. The spokes seems to narrow.

Another shame is that the 993 turbo is so forgotten. I think there is a really rare revell kit of it, right?

Sorry Andy, my paranoia made me forget my manners :banghead:

Very nicely done!
That color is terrific and I suspect it will also look great on the 850i.
You worked a great shine into it. I can even see my own reflection in my monitor!

Wouldn't you be slightly falling into paranoļa...? :evillol: :evillol:
I'm not paranoid, everone is just out to get me! :naughty: ;)
Now, I'm off to find my AFMOTY entry WIP and bump it LOL j/k

Great job so far Andy: also new pics make justice to it. I'm not a Porsche fan (well is someone would give me 1 I can't refuse LOL) and also not a far of the kinda Bourgogne red but it seem fabulous, as per the finishing: it's a killer.

Looks really nice, fabulous finish and the detail work on the black trim looks perfect.

You could always do what I did to make those type of wheels larger diameter, see the progress thread below for info:

Thanks everyone!

The next time I get that "gotta starta curbside" urge, I have Tamiya's GT3 and a bottle of Porsche Speed Yellow lined up. :grinyes: Looking forward to it, too.

The only thing I don´t like so much are the door-opener, because there is no hole between them and the door :eek7:
Good eyes, Micha. Yeah the door handles were molded in one piece on the body. I think it's one of those little things that seperates a true top tier kit from a decent second. I had though about doing the surgery to fix it, but to be honest if I had the body still wouldn't be painted. :disappoin So, I've done my best to ignore it. But if that's the only flaw you find, I'll take it as high praise.

As for the wheels, they measure out to 0.760". X 24 = 18.24, minus an inch and a half for the lip and they're 17" wheels. I think that's about right for this car- in 1990 anything larger than 17" was almost unheard of. The spoke size is a bit narrow for 964 cup wheels, though.

http://www.performance2and4.co.uk/img/964%20cup17.jpg

Oh well, I figure maybe it shows off the brakes a bit better.

Martin- I want to say that I've seen a Revell 993, but have never gotten my hands on one. Shame, as it's probably my favorite of the 911's- certainly of the modern ones.

Tang- Internet cables still giving you trouble?

Very nice!
Thanks for filling in the detail on this build. I too miss Leon's products and awesome service. I was lucky enough to get an order just a few days before the end so I do have some stock on hand.
I was looking for a simple project to start the new year, and a Fujimi curbside was my first choice.

Very, very , very cool looking model you got there! Lovely shine on the paintjob and it looks very cool for a low-involvement model.

As you said, too bad it's not a 993!
Oh, in case you should ever find a 993 (or even for me), i have done some stuffs on the rims you found in your 964 kit(as I have it too). I combined them with outer rings from OZ futura rims and got this result.

Eitherway, a superlovely model, I tried looking for flaws, couldn't find any.

Super job!

color is original for a Porsche but gives all its effect to the model.

Actually, not really--it might have been original for a 964, but it is very close to the candy-apple red/burgundy color available on the hallowed 993. If I were to get a 993 turbo, I would surely paint it this color.

Model looks great (except for door handles, and headlight lenses look a little weird). I love seeing these as I am a Porsche fanatic (perhaps my avatar indicates this). I have never done Porsche work this good--my first Stuttgart model was a Fujimi Enthusiast Series kit with 150+ parts.
