Programming A New Key Fob

The remote operated door lock, emergency honking, trunk opening, and horn honking key fob on my Taurus was lost along with my keys. I had a spare set of keys so I went to a Ford Dealer and purchased an new remote key fob. The guy there at the body shop told me to put the fob next to the ignition switch and turn the key forward quickly in the igniton lock three times and that would reporgram the new fob for that car. No matter how many times I turn the key three times the fob won't work. The fob has a brand new battery. Can one of you help me out here? It's a 95 Taurus sedan. Thanks.

He forgot to mention that it can only program a certain amount of times (I think it's 5). After that it will ignore any programming. You'll probably have to reset it. Off hand I forget how to do that, but I could research it for you if you want to give it a try. If you live by a dealer that would be the easiest way to reset it. They shouldn't charge you, infact, they SHOULD have programmed it for you in the first place, seeing how much they overcharge for them :p

Was the body tech referring to the key fob or a PATS key? The fob is not transmitting unless a button is pressed, and the remote keyless antenna is not near the ignition switch. There is no transponder in the key fob.

It sounds like the directions he gave are part fob programming, part PATS programming.

Do you have the owner's manual for the car? Usually the key fob programming steps will be detailed in the manual. Be sure to have all fobs with you because you usually need to reprogram them all at the same time.

I'll have to check the service manual for 1995 tomorrow evening for programming details if you do not have the owner's manual.

The fob has a brand new battery.
Did you double check the polarity?

You may also be waiting too long before your pressing the button to set the code. I think you only have 20 seconds to do it. Also make sure you're not turning the key 3 times from the off position (the position you put the key in). You need to go from the second key postion to the third. I'll see if I can find a picture for you. When it's ready to be programmed the doors will lock/unlock automatically, telling you it's successfully programed. Then press any button on the fob within 20 seconds. I also thought you had to turn the key 8 times and not 3. The last (8th) time it needs to end in the 'on' key postiion. This needs to be done within 10 seconds. The service manual might have instuctions for doing this, and if it does I'll reprint them for you. It's actually easy to program it, which is why I'm surprised they didn't just do it for you. Oh well, all is well that ends well

Try this:

Remote Transmitter Programming

NOTE: It is necessary to have all (maximum of four — original and/or new) of the remote transmitters available prior to beginning this procedure.

Insert a key in the ignition and turn from OFF to ON eight times in rapid succession (within 10 seconds) with the eighth turn ending in the ON position. The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that programming mode has been entered.

Within 20 seconds, program a remote transmitter by pressing any button on a transmitter.

The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that the remote transmitter has been programmed. (If more than 20 seconds pass before pressing a remote transmitter button, the programming mode will exit and the procedure will have to be repeated.)

Repeat the previous step to program additional remote transmitters.

The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that each remote transmitter has been programmed.

After the remote transmitters have been programmed, turn the ignition to OFF or wait 20 seconds. Again, the doors will lock/unlock to confirm programming has been completed.

According to the 1995 factory service manual, it sounds like you need to turn the ignition to run, the insert a shorting plug into the program connector (C4) which is taped to a harness behind the glove box. The door locks should lock and unlock. The service manual says to turn the ignition to Run next (but it never says to turn it off of Run from the first step) and then press a button on one of the remotes to be programmed. It notes that you may need to press the button more than once. When programmed, the doors should lock and then unlock. Press a button on the next remote to be programmed. Again the doors should lock and then unlock. This needs to be done for each remote you want programmed. Turn the ignition switch to off, then remove the shorting plug.

These instructions will work on Taurus models, 93 - 95:

Turn ignition to RUN or ACC. Momentarily jump pins in programming connector located in LR quarter panel area. All doors will lock then unlock to confirm programming mode. Press any button on 1st transmitter. Door locks will cycle to confirm programming. Press any button on 2nd transmitter (up to 4 transmitters total possible). Turn ignition to OFF. Locks will again cycle to indicate end of programming mode.
