I have a 2001 silverado ext cab 2wd short bed with the 4.8 v8 4sp auto trans with 44,000 miles on it. Most of the driving has been to and from work wich is 15 miles one way city driving. After a trip to the coast last week my transmission started making noise a whine while shifting. There is a delay in the shifting from 2-3, engine will race and shift is slow to engage. I had the oil and filter changed problem went away for trip home but came back next day except now it wont shift above 3rd and the shift from second to 3rd slips and wont occur until i let up off of the accelerator. Although noise is gone now. Local dealer cant get me in until next week. Any help would be wonderful.. No check engine light yet.

Do not pay that money to rebuild the tranny! I had the same problem and the dealer told me the same thing that I had to have the transmission rebuild for about 3K. Did some research and found out about the TransGo Shifkit, I got one off Ebay for 35 dollar and did the job myself. It now shifts smoother then ever before.

Thanks for the replies, it still burns me up that the transmission in having problems at 43000 miles. I have read a lot of complaints about the 4l60e and that many people have them rebuilt at around 100,000 miles with I would be fine with. I drove it to the store in second and now it it clunking when I put it in reverse. Guess I will have to pull it out and have a look.

hell when i picked up my 03 Sierra it had 33k on it already. drove it a week before i had the oil changed since they put basic oil in a truck that's been getting full synthetic(not good for the seals) and i noticed that the trans was leaking from the tail shaft seal so i checked th e fuild and it was a quart low. thought it hadn't been checked for a while so i topped of the trans fluid. checked it a week later and it was a quart low again. i wasn't to happy about that, but i got if fixed. stuck a quart of lucas trans fixer/additive. doesn't leak anymore.
