not much info to go on you need to give a bit more. what size alt do you have. what truck. ware is the second batter going to be mounted. what are you going to be doing with it.
get ready to spend some heavy cash.
go down to a RV shop. ask them for a dual chagering setup. to run your second battery as a isolated back up. stop in the truck supply store get a bigger alt. the bigger the better. get the new space age mout any ware battery for your second battery. yes its a lot of cash but worth it in the long run.
what this will do is let you use the main for starting the truck and the second one for running what ever.
now if you just want to keep a battery charged for a troling motor. do not use your truck to try to charge it. bad move. the heavy duty troling motor batterys will blow out your charging system.
i just got out of a law sute becoues a old fart wanted to use his truck to charge the wrong type of battery. he wanted to put a troling motor battery in the second battery spot run down to the dinner leave his truck running and be ready to go fishing after lunch.
what you need for this type of system is a to cover the bed of the truck with solar cells and a charge controler. one set in the boat and one on float charge in the truck. swap them out during the day, plug it in during the night.

Unless you have a special need for dual battery setup you are better off with out them.
Why do you want the setup?
You would be better of just to get one high amp single battery.
