The car: 1992 VW Jetta, gas, manual tranny, 1.8L engine.
The issue: this car is going through starters like they are kleenex. I am about to drive 45 mins to pick up the third starter I will personally have paid for in the last 3 years.
Does anyone have any ideas what might be killing these things? The altenator was over-charging, but it's been switched out. I just put in a new battery yesterday... I am totally at a loss. One mechanic mentioned something about making sure I get a new bushing (???) with the next starter because if that is not replaced, it can fry the starter. I have never heard this before. Another mechanic [says he] took out a corroded wire and that should fix the problem, but no joy.
Please help.

I don't recall seeing a bushing when I had mine off. Doesn't mean it doesn't have one, I just don't remember one. I can only think of two causes.
1. Drag on the flywheel when starting - clutch not fully disengaged?
2. Excessive amperage - have a dealer check the amps on the starter
I have an extra starter sitting on a shelf if you live in Florida.
