Insurance is such a b****!! I am 17 and for me to insure a Mustang GT it would be like $4000-4400 a year!!! I have to F'in wait till i'm 21 to register a nice car so my rates will go down!!

Yeah, $400 per month is too much to spend.

if you're 17 and have the money to buy a mustang gt, chances are that you've got the money for the insurance. my accord is 2400 per year, canadian so just over 2k american.

Nah not like that I can afford the car but not the insurance.

Excellent point. There's more to the cost of driving than just the vehicle cost.

I knew a guy in college, all he wanted was a Porsche. He finally scrimped and saved up enough of a down payment so he could afford the payments. But then he couldn't drive it, he had no money for either gas or insurance. I think he tried to keep it for about 6 months or so, then had to sell it.

Rates aren't exactly going down anyway! mine just went up. I haven't had any tickets or accidents, there was just a rate increase :banghead: What does a 17 year old need with a Mustang GT anyway??? All you're gonna do is get yourself into trouble. You might think otherwise, but it'll happen. You'll be at the stoplight and decide that you have to show off to the import next to you and you'll speed off ...get pulled over...ticket...rate increase...:(

yeah speeding tickets hurt.... some more than others. i got lucky, i'm with the same company as my parents (my plan, my car, they pay for both, it's safer for them if i get into an accident) so since we've got both my sisters on the same company and both my parents we get decreased rates. i got a 4pt ticket (clocked at 159kph, the cop droped it to 130 in a 100 zone) and my insurance went up 15%, not as much as some people i know though. a friend of mine would have to pay $12,000 per year because of his two accidents.

My trans am was $265 a month. Thats part of the reason I sold it and I am 20 years old. Driving a cavalier now and its $103. Worth it to me, I didn't *need* the trans am that much.

'93 Lumina and '99 lumina LTZ: $642 for 6 months. You can save a lot of money by paying the amount in full rather than paying a little each month.

Don't count on that either. I have allstate they told me around age 28 my rates will drop a bit. I have multiple cars on my policy that does reduce the cost a little. If you're 17 you are still in high school right? They have a discount at most insurance companies if you are a good student. I had a decent average in school so I had a 20% discount. Take advantage of it if you can.

Mazda 323, 90$ a month for a 18 year old...Do the math. Get a small cheap car, it pays for itself. GP was nice, but mazda payes for itself.

Yea I was told around 21 your rates drop. So like that's murder $12K!!! You can drive a Viper for that much at 17. LOL But no I didn't make the average grade in school to get the insurance discount. But I figure now it would be better for me to just have the Cavalier and pay $2500 a year. Mustang is $4000 + a year here in suckie NJ. So figure when my rates go down at 21 then I get a nice car. And with the stop light I just go to Raceway park my local strip and have a nice time go'ing fast.

well the guy's insurance is 12k because he's been in two accidents in the two years he's been driving.

Yea, that sucks. But I have to wait until I'm 21 till my rates drop before I can get a nice car. DAAMM insurance!!!

Trust me, your insurance quote is NOT going to drop drastically the moment you hit 21 as believe it or not, at your end of the age spectrum, your age doesn't play as great a part in what you are quoted compared to things such as, brand of car, engine capacity/BHP rating/manufacturers speed figures, where you live, where the car is stored, what you do for a living, what kind of (extra) licenses you have if any or further driver training, the car's attractiveness to thieves, the car's typical accident claims records (according to stolen vehicles records) and a whole lot of other things like that.

No, I think it will go down esspecually in a state like AZ or NV. Places out west are cheaper usually. So, when I'm 21 I can get a viper or somthing mod it up! You're alittle right about where you live but like where I store it? I never got asked that. So basically it will go down if you have a generally clean record.

fredjacksonsan
01-02-2007, 09:20 PM
Usually it doesn't drop at 21, but rather at 25.

Theturbo551
01-02-2007, 09:25 PM
Yes, but I think when your out west it's cheaper.

What's being West got to do with anything when you are in New Jersey? Unless there's some other New Jersey that my dumb British arse doesn't know about?

I wouldn't count on that! Even if they do drop, the drop isn't going to be HUGE!! 21 is still quite young. I would do research on all the insurance compaines to find the cheapest...you might be surprised who is cheap! Find out what you can get discounts for...
I get discounts for multi-car, 3 year no accident/no tickets, premium paid in full (rather than installments), and for getting my quote in advance! I paid my insurance yesterday and my rate went up 8% for no apparent reason...just a rate hike! $#!^
The main factor for me saving $$ is paying the premium in full. I saved over $100/6months by paying the full amount.

No at 21 it prob goes down a little. Then at 25 it goes down alot. And when your out west it is alittle cheaper.

The key factor in this discussion is that WE have been buying car insurance and know how it works; hence us telling you what does or does not happen.
YOU haven't bought any insurance before in your life; hence you say "probably" and "i think".

fredjacksonsan

Metro areas are more expensive than rural areas; population density has a lot to do with the rates.

The insurance companies have platoons of underwriters figuring out how much to charge, depending on where you live and the laws in that state.

But face it....if you're under 21 expect big dollars for your auto insurance, especially if you have a car known to be mishandled by other young drivers.

Unfortunately for you, it doesn't go down when you're 21, not even a little.

Exactly; which is why, with my several years' experience working in automobile insurance, I said 25 is the "magic age" where you get a reduction. There's always exceptions, but don't count on it.

Theturbo551

Sucks but if your in a not so really populated area it cheaper and when your 25?

Ye, usually at 21 you have a job that pays enough so car insurance isn't a problem. Even with a viper.
