Power Window Pooped Out

96 Lumina, 30k miles. My drivers side window quit working - it's the kind that goes all the way down when you push the button for a second or so. The switch makes clicking sounds when I push it. I removed the tray, unplugged the switch and brushed one side of the contacts (couldn't get to the other sides) with a gun barrel cleaning brush (all I could find that would fit, somewhat). No luck with that. I'd like to know the order of easiest, cheapest things I could try next.

Thanks
John

My windows started acting goofy right before they completely went out. They would go down, but not back up:( Turned out to be just the switch that needed replacing. Your case could be diffferent though. I don't think there are many options for what could be wrong....it's probably the switch or the motor...what else could it be??? p.s. switch is much cheaper than the motor...I'd start there. You should be able to test the motor somehow to eliminate it as the problem..

I guess I could find some way to test the switch, then, if I can get to it, try jumping the motor. Guess there's no obvious quick fix...lol.

I don't know the exact details of how to do it (safely) so I don't want to mislead you. I remember that when my window failed, they somehow hooked the car's battery to a wire from the motor and the window went right up. I got a switch from the dealer ($20) and have had no problems since. That was on a '93 vehicle so the price may not be accurate. Also, if you have access to a junk yard, you can get switches there for a couple of bucks. I got my rear switch from the j/y and it works beautifully. It's a risk, but also a lot cheaper!

Just thought I would clarify on testing, I believe they hooked the battery to [one of] the wires that connects to the window switch.

I've also had a switch go out causing the Drivers window to stop working. 98 tho.
