i have an 89 runner and i was wondering if it came originally with a lsd diff. ( i heard that some trucks did) the easiest way to find out(that i can see) is by using the serial number . does anyone know where i can go for that or bacially to find out if my runner came with lsd? the reason i ask is cause i want to install a lock rite locker and if my truck did have a lsd it will be alot more work to install.
thanks alot
thanks alot

Jack up both the rear tires of the vehicle and rotate one by hand (transmission in neutral). If the other tire rotates in the opposite direction, you have a standard differential. If the other tire rotates in the same direction as the one you're rotating, you have a lsd.

The other tire may not rotate at all if the tranny is in neutral, unless it is L.S.
(the drive line will turn if there is any brake drag on the other wheel)

tru, but i would imagine that after 400 000 kms the lsd would be worn out. right? i believe that the lsd if any would be a clutch type right?

It would depend on how hard it was used and the quality of the unit. I have only had two vehicles with lsds. Neither one ever needed anything replaced in the lsd besides gear oil and additive. Get in some sand and find out.
Yes, clutch type if original.

We're not talking about traction but how to find out if you have limited slip, that will require raising the wheels off the ground. Even a worn out unit will have a little friction.
If someone abused the unit by over reving when one wheel is mired down this will prematurely wear out the friction plates.
I too have run and have had buddies run them for YEARS with out any problems or needing work.
Lockers on the other hand I have had to replace and work on.
Running serial numbers does not preclude a later swap by one of the previous owners.

alright. i would imagine my runner doesn't have one, but looks like the only sure way is to take appart the diff.

According to my links, there were no lsds available for your year 4Runner. The only possible differentials are the Toyota 8" 4-pinion or 2-pinion differentials.
I think you can assume you have the 2-pinion.
