Shot through numerous oranges before but NEVER run a red.
Was pulled over once for running an orange but got off with a warning when a truck slid through the intersection where I would have been. (it was a very wet road)

I probobly ran more reds this week end than anyone here has run in thier life.
But then at 3am when you have to wait at the same set of lights at the same time everyday and your the ONLY vechile on the road you can get away with such things. I also drive down the wrong side of the road, and do U turns in places that during the day theres no way I could get away with. But then Hazard lights and an HT licence and an 8ton truck make such things a bit easier.

Well I ran my first red the about a week ago. It scared the shit out of me.
Here is what happened.
The intersection with the light was really crowded, because kids were getting out of school and going the same way. Well I waited through three cycles of lights before I finally got up to the light. Just as I did the damn thing turned yellow. Then it turned red just before I went through the interesection. As I am running the light I look over to my left and see a police officer sitting two cars back waiting to turn into my lane. I said "OH F@CK." I quickly turned into a parking lot so he couldn't see me and I saw him drive by. I guess I just got lucky that day.

I’ve only ever ran a red once and that was when I was rushing Moon to an emergency chemist on a Sunday afternoon. I sat at the damn red for so long and there were no cars coming in either direction (and hadn’t been for ages). Damn lights that have stupid phases.

Green light = go
Red light = stop
Yellow light = go like hell so you don't have to stop ;)
I've started through a green light before it turned, but I won't go that far through an intersection until I see the green...
But one night when I lived in Missouri I ran a COMPLETELY red light, and what's more is I didn't even know it until the 8-year-old in the back seat said something about telling my aunt :o Then I looked back in the rear view and realized that he was totally right!

I have yet to run red lights on purpose...but I don't think that means that I haven't done it. My problem is that I 'll look at the cross traffic's light to figure out if it's going yellow yet...a few times I'll see green and my brain thinks it means my light is green. I'll realize my fopaux <sp?> at the least second and slam on my brakes. Living in Vegas, pushing yellows is just a common practice. I'll cetch the tail end of a yellow and watch at least 2 other cars follow me thru the intersection.
Stop signs are a different story. A lot of times I'll just slow down, but a few times I don't realize there was a stop sign till I'm all the way thru the intersection. I do that almost as much as I push the yellows.

There's one stoplight that I run almost every day. It's right by my house, and when I come home from work at 10:30 at night, I always have to wait, and it's a LONG LONG wait, and there's NO other cars around at all. Anywho, usually, I just stop, check for cars and go.
I have run a few other lights unintentionally, and usually, I just drive through them, and a passenger will be like... "Uh... You know that was a red light, right?!" Especially in Seattle, becuase, while here the lights are mounted above the intersections, there, they are mounted low on the sides (on the corners, not in between sidewalks like here).
Also, I was looking for something one day, and I came across this, thinking about doing it to my car...

This guy attached a 150lb magnet to his motorcycle, and it trips all the stoplight sensors in the road... (Magnet only weighs 5lbs, but it has a 150lb lift ability)

Running a red is something I've never done and have no desire to do.
As for the picture, its funny :) but (at least in CA) there is no such thing as "running a yellow". Is this true elsewhere?

depends on the circumstances- if its an emergency- only red-lights where there are actually cars I stop at- but I have quite good luck when it comes to having green lights:D :D

Most of the traffic light systems in New Zealand operate using a proprietary system called SCATS. (What that stands for I don't know...) Anyway, the system looks at patterns of traffic volume by registering vehicles that pass over the sensors buried in the road surface in the various lanes of the road.
In response to the traffic counts by direction, SCATS will alter the phasing to account for busier traffic at certain times of the day or if there is more traffic coming from a particular direction, give them a longer phasing etc.
Unfortunately, SCATS has problems with motorbikes (the sensor coils work on induction and may not be triggered by alloy block motorbikes or indeed bicyclists).
Also the problem that SPEC2GIRL mentioned at night occurs due to the relatively low traffic volumes. Because, there may be twice as much traffic coming from a direction ie 5 cars per hour vs 2 cars per hour then SCATS tends to assign a longer phasing to that direction. It may also 'wait' until it expects a couple of cars (based on traffic volume in the previous hours) have queued on the opposing traffic stream before activating a green.
Unfortunately, because SCATS links most traffic lights you can be in the non-priority traffic flow and get a red at every light while driving.
One useful thing about SCATS is that it can be remotely controlled so where there is video monitoring or a complaint, the traffic engineer can manually amend the phasing remotely without physically going to the intersection. This can be for special occasions eg parades or VIP visits or for emergency services eg intersections near police, fire, ambulances bases (if so enabled).
I've driven a car around the North Shore of Auckland with a traffic engineer with a laptop with SCATS and a mobile phone modem and had a 'green wave' ie by the time we reached an intersection it was green every time.
;)

I saw the COOLEST thing about red-light-cameras on TLC the other night... they have this new system for busy intersections which has 8 or so cameras monitoring traffic for a bit ahead of the intersection. When the cameras detect a vehicle that is not stopping for the light in time (i.e. is going to run the light) it holds the red for cross-traffic long enough that a T-bone collision is avoided. Then it promptly mails out a ticket to the offender.
This prevents the often fatal side-impact collision. How many lives will be saved when this device is in common use, we can only guess.

You only see greens becasue there is only one traffic light in Palmy North. :finger:
SCATS, as Rep Called it is quite an interesting thing to get to know.
If you spend all day on the road, driving through the same sets of lights at differnt times of the day it actualy becomes clear how effective it is at controlling traffic during rush hour, and how adapotive it is. For example the phasing does change during school holidays to allow for the differnt traffic flow. And there are certian lights that if I get to before 6am will go green almost imediatly for me, but after 6am I will have to wait ;) for the phasing, as apprently 6am is considered the start of rush hour.
Unforunatly you also get to know its flaws. For example it is terriable at dealing with a fine saterday morning when everyone in Auckland wants to go shopping. Im guessing it must be the enginers day off. :)

Well, thus far, I've been driving since I was 16 and I am 23 1/2 now, and I just got my 23 ticket from the South Carolina State Patrol! Yeah! Lets hear a big round of applause. But, out of those, only 2 have been for red lights, one was for jumping the light during a race with a kid in a A4, and the other was when running a yellow/turned red in the intersection. But, I can honestly say, I've never ran a blood red (as in the traffic going the other way has had a green light) ever.. thank the Lord. But, that's not to say it can't happen, some of the lights here in Denver are BOOTY! HA HA!
