1992 corolla issue

i have a 1992 corolla which is doing the following
starts up fine everytime...no probs
can drive for 5-10 miles then it will start to splutter and feel like it is running out of fuel progressively til there is no power left on the throttle whatsoever....sound like it sucking just air when you apply the throttle..

i can pull over, stop, shut off motor and immediately restart and the problem is gone for another few miles...then it does the same.

my car has a new fuel pump (4 months) filter (2 months)
also did have the problem with tank( pump was trying to suck a vaccuum which was fixed by drilling holes in fuel cap( this worked great for what seemed like the same problem))

this definitely feels like a fuel issue to me but could be something else??
also there is no code being put out by the computer (checked that)
i just can't figure out what would be restricting the fuel flow now or is it perhaps the pressure regulator and why would itreset when restarted???

any help much appreciated fellaz

my thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply with ideas

Sounds like it could also be a ignition coil failing.

My '89 just ate one in 5 months and when it died it acted the same way, never felt a coil die the way it did.

So maybe, just maybe yours is failing when it gets hot :dunno:

thanks for the reply dude
will try changing it since i have another 2 the same...
just wondering if it's hot wouldn't it fail constantly and do the same when restarted?
actually it wasn't run over the holiday for 10 days and since going back to work it has been fine until 2 days ago and problem came back
work is 17 miles away and 2 miles from home it does it again...
2 days in a row....
it just bugging me why it runs fine again when stopped and restarted...

hmmmm
i will change coil pack and try that
thanks for the advice friend

sounds like you got something being pulled up the fuel line and stopping the gas flow have you done a pressure check on the fuel line. also never heard of drilling holes in the gas cap the return must be stopped up or blocked off the return line has to go back to the tank can you smell gas up by the motor when it stalls out i still say its got some thing to do with the retun line

thanx for input m8
how would i pressure test my fuel line?...
there is no smell of fuel from the engine compartment...there was from the gas cap but i have changed back my gas cap for one with no holes and i get a vaccuum sucked in my tank by my fuel pump. when i remove the cap you can hear my tank sucking air like it's just came up from a deep sea dive...lol.
i agree that i think my return line is prolly blocked...but i know neither which line it is nor how to unblock it...i have run several fuel system cleaners through all to no avail...and i understand that the return line has to do with balancing the tank pressure...but seems to be malfunctioning.
the car sat up for 3 years before i bought it...i know the owner....and the tank had nasty old fuel in it...and no doubt this fuel is prolly in the return line too....but it's been running for almost a year like this...a new pump was installed with the tank from my other same year and model corolla when i bought it as a project. this prob is bugging the hell out of me.
here's what i've done lately...new plugs, leads and cap and new distributor rotor were installed when i got a diagnostic code referring to the distributor circuit. my fuel filter has less than 5000 miles on it and my pump...prob bout 10000 or less.
the weird thing really is the feeling of running out of fuel when i have a full tank....and to shut it off and restart to find the prob gone for another few miles...i can even do it whilst driving....just slip in neutral, shut off, wait a few seconds whilst coasting then restart it and slip back into drive and keep going....it's a ghost i think.
the car starts fine everytime. also it shudders pretty bad when in gear and stopped at a light or whatever. i have changed the transmission filter and fluid less than 3000 miles ago...car is more responsive to acceleration but still has the shudder...more so when a.c. is on.
any ideas on that one would be appreciated.

i anticipate any responses eagerly

thanks ASTRO

a little addition...there is and has always been a low whining noise from the pump or somewhere only when the car running...which subsides when i give it gas...could this be the pump struggling to push against a blocked return line...tho it sounds like it's coming from the tank but it also sounds like something under the drivers side...could not see anything upon inspection....help on this welcome too my friends...

thanks again
