95 taurus ignition key problem

The winged part with the finger grips where you insert the ignition key can be rotated out of the off position without the key in the cylinder. I have to physically rotate it to the off position before inserting the key and then it starts fine. I have read a little about the rod in the steering column, would it be that or something else? Is this a job for a shade tree mechanic or more serious?

Thanks
Lee

My 92 does the same and I have a thread on tere with the answer with more detail, but in a nutshell you rotate the the lock to the run postion and insert a punch through the access hole on the underside of the column to release and pull 'er out.

When I priced them, napa has one for $50 and Autozone for around $20. Bad part is that it's just the ignition so you'll be fumbling keys between the ign. and doors :(

Thanks wrightz28, So to make sure I understand.....I need to replace the tumbler? Does the winged part come with it? I searched your posts, but (wow) you have hundreds. Can you provide a link to that post or tell me the title?

That s/b the link. It's all one assembly, "winged" part included. I found it available in black or chrome.
