New Drawing - '76 Trans Am

Well, Lemorris told me to stop lurking and start posting, so here's one I finished a couple of days ago. It's been a while since I've posted any drawings. I included some WIP stages so you guys could see how this one came together.

Medium: Prismacolor pencils on 9x12" Stonehenge paper. Took about 15 - 20 hours in total.

Stage 1: Just the line drawing. As you can see i used the grid method for proportions and so my lines would stay as clean as possible.

Stage 2: Starting to lay down the color. I often do the really detailed stuff later (in this case, the headlights), just so nothing important gets smudged or ruined by accident.

Stage 3: Almost done

Done! Notice the white gouache paint in key spots, like the hood scoop, front fender, wheels, doorlines. Works great to cover up mistakes :)

Hope you all had a great Christmas!

Amazing. Truely amazing. Absolutely photorealistic. Aren't the wheels the hardest parts of all?

Thats awesome! One of my freinds tried to use gouache and he said it was like acrylic watercolor or something. This is the first time ive seen something actually done with it. Its jawdropping!

Knightvision: Yeah, the wheels were probably the hardest thing to do on this one, since they had that polished look and the pic was taken under very bright sunlight.

Paintedtrain: gouache is kinda like acrylic, except you can re-wet it once it's on the paper like you can do with watercolor.

Thanks for the replies

excellent choice of car.

of course it's damn mint, ie, your rendering. so i won't mention that.

uhh. i just did.

anyway, i love the early to mid 70s T/As. my fave is 71-73.

Hi Alex,
Great work as usual. Do you trace your pencil sketch onto the Stonehenge with regular graphite pencil? I find that you have to be very careful or the colored pencil won't cover the graphite. Keep up the good work. Some times I will redraw my original onto the Stonehenge with a neutral colored pencil that way I don't have to erase as I go.

Alex.. like GirlBear, I keep coming back to look at your marvelous drawings.. the wheels - detail of chrome - is wonderful. You just keep getting better, if that's possible. Robo

bonz: I took that pic at a car show last summer and thought it would make a good drawing.

Gbritnell: For this one i just did the grid and line drawing with a 2H, straight onto the stonehenge. Depending on the color and tone I'm working with, sometimes i don't need to erase the pencil, and if I'm working with lighter colors I just erase as i draw. Your method sounds good though, I'll have to try it sometime.

Alex, I'm just stunned at how well you can create reflective painted metal bodywork
and chrome with pencil color.
Showing the step-by-step just gives me a greater appreciation for your artwork.

As usual Alex, your work draws the most amazing responses. Your work is simply OUTSTANDING.

I enjoyed seeing how you put the drawing together - the simple line drawing in the grid (if my completed sketches were as good as your simple line drawings, I'd die a happy man); the colour fill, the work on reflections and how you build the picture, through to the stunningly detailed finished product.

You are a class act, and work like this just adds to the anticipation we all have when you start a new thread announcing the latest work. Just stunning work Alex, stunning.
