My wife's 2002 Intrepid set a check engine light about a week ago. I completed the diagnostic test using the key on/off 3 times method and it showes a cod P0440. Can anyone tell what this code is and what to do about fixing the problem. I also printed the list of codes from page 1 of this forum but it lists only 2 digit codes whats the deal between the 2 digit codes and the P 4 digit codes.

Thanks

P-4 digit codes are OBD11 codes.
Your code is for a EVAP emissions fail test code.
Some cry PCM systems will give both OBD1 2 digit and 4 digit OBD11 or manf. spefic codes.depending on the test method.
The 4 digit OBD11 codes give better detail of the problem.

After you get the code get some good repair info on the repair flow chart for the code.
A good factory repair manual or

Will take you threw the repair procedure for what ever code you have.

you need to replace the LDP

What is a LDP? A leak detection pump?
Can you explain how you got that just from a 440 code?

I've changed alot of them already, p0440 general evap system failure. It's on the right side of the gas tank on top of the charcoal canister, you need to lower the tank slightly, but you remove it

You might be on tract with it.
But a 440 codes just says emission failure.
It can/may be one of many things.
A code does not say replace the part. It says check it out.
Proper testing first.:grinyes: :grinno:

that's true, but without a oem scanner drb it is very hard to fix these systems. I mean you need the scanner to be able to run a forced ldp monitor test while being able to also monitor the switch status at the same time. It can be done without a oem scanner ie snap-on but a lot more work, and time will be needed. there is a lot of tricks to dg is fast but you need to be able to understand the system a criteria needed to set the code

i agree with hundahunta i replaced many pumps for this code on this year it's a nvld as the engine controller has been replaced to a ngc controller in this year and then they switched the evaporative system to a natural vacuum leak detection system and the canister will come with the nvld pump

Isn't this code also possibly caused by the gas cap being bad/old/leaking and needs to be replaced (for $10)?

Welcome to AF.
But always check the date on a post before posting back to it .
If it is a old post like this one get them just rest in peace.
To answer you question read the post that have been posted back here.

You need the manfactures engine code not just the OBD11 codes.

nope a leaking gas cap will cause a p0456, p0442, or p0455.
