Thinking of buying a Fiero

A guy I work with is trying to sell his '85 Fiero GT for $500. Sounds like a good deal to me but there are two things I'm wondering about.
He says it's a 4 speed manual transmission with a 4 cylinder engine... but I was under the impression that the '85 GT's had V6's in them. Does that sounds right?
He mentioned two small problems with the engine (which I can't remember right now) but I don't think it'll cost much to fix them. I'm talking to him tonight to find out exactly what was wrong and how many miles the car has on it.
What do you guys think?

I've never heard of an 85 GT Fiero coming with a four Cylinder 2.5L Iron Duke ?
The 85 Fiero was the second year of production for the Fiero . What made the GT model different was the fact that it had the 2.8L V-6 engine , and the aero nose as opposed to the coupe nose . It also had a different spring package ( WS6 ) . The 85-86 V-6's came witha Muncie 4-speed with a 3.65 ratio .
The car your looking at may be an 85 SE ?
Keep us posted as to what you find out .

Okay I must have heard him wrong. It IS indeed a GT, V6 and all. Apparently it needs a new starter and new bearings however. I found a place online where I can buy the parts to rebuild this engine for about $600 which seems like the best way to go to me. Gotta see if I can scrounge up the cash first though.
The site I found the engine rebuild on is The Fiero Store (http://www.secureleadercom.com/fsstore/initsite.asp).

The 85 GT was still the notchback style, I think the fastback looks much better.
I think $600 is a little steep for an engine rebuild kit! Have you rebuilt engines before? If not, it might be better to have a shop do it...

have fun rebuilding that engine. not to discourage you, but i changed the oil pan gasket on my 86 GT and it was no picnic. i had to drop the exhaust, take out the starter, take a plate off the trans, un-bolt the engine from the frame, jack it up, and the finagle the pan out. it was really a pain. if you do decide to do it, i suggest just taking the engine out.
P.S. Have Fun!!!!!:D

That is extremely common.
It spun a bearing. Dont even bother rebuilding it. Drop another V-6 in it or do a 3800SC conversion, or V-8 conversion or something.
Rebuilding the bottom end is pointless on that motor.
