99 SE No Blower at all

Hey gang,

Early this a.m. I had air flow from my blowers driving to work and the next time I get into the car after work, I didn't.

Checked the fuses from inside the car (passenger side). Could there be any in the engine compartment?

I also replaced the blower motor about 2 years ago. Somehow water backed up into just behind the firewall. I did find the drain tube attached to the firewall. It was full of yellow silicon grease and a strange pebble, almost like pumice. Ironically, the car was just in the dealership for an oil change.

I don't know if this means anything but in the summer, if you roll the window down you get a smell of stagnant water. My fix....keep the windows up.

There are three possibilities here. The fan motor has gone bad, the resistor is totally shot or the ignition switch has gone bad and you are not getting power to the fan circuit. The first thing I would do is pull the fan and test it with a 12 volt source. If the fan motor works then try replacing the resistor. Finally if the fan doesn't work you may need to go to a mechanic and have the ignition switch replaced, you can do it yourself but it is not an easy job.

Sounds like a resistor to me, the water put a hurting on it I'm sure. Replaced one on my 02 last winter, a real pain in the neck, you will see what I mean when you do it..............good luck

Here's an update. Before I started ripping out the blower I tried turning it on, just to see. The fan came on at speed levels 2-5. Nothing on the lowest setting. Does this point more to the transisitor?

I did lift up the cover under the hood and noticed the rubber seal had fallen over the opening into the blower. No filter. I also noticed the glue seal to be giving out all around the windshield.

Any recomendations to re-seal? Silicon?

The resister is bad and needs to be replaced. That is why it won't work on position 1.

The sealant used around the windshield and used to bond the windshield to the body is special stuff but auto parts stores have windshield sealant you can use in the interim.

On any weatherstripping type seals you can use RTV silicone sealant or weatherstrip adhesive like 3M brand. It is highly recommended to install a cabin air filter. It will make a difference when the HVAC is in vent or AC position non recirculate mode when the intake shutter is wide open and air is drawn in from the outside. AC Delco CF132 or any Purolator or Fram aftermarket. The one from a Buick Regal 97 - 04 fits perfectly.

To keep on the theme, instead of starting a new thread, here's my problem:

Our 98 grand prix's blower motor stopped working with the switch turned on the 2 lowest settings awhile back. Then it stopped working on the next 2 highest settings, and finally nothing at all. Replaced the resistor with a new one from the dealership today, and I still don't have setting 1 or 5.

It is of note that the blower motor sounds terrible, and likely needs replacing, but is it possible there's also an issue with the harness or switch? Maybe the new resistor is bad?

I'm stumped.

If the blower sounds that bad it should be replaced. It may be loading down the circuits. Position 5 is controlled by a high speed blower relay located on the blower motor resistor but the 12 volts to energize the relay is supplied directly off of battery power so check the HVAC HI fuse and 12 volts at the fuse socket located at the fuse box by the glovebox. The wiring at the BMR is a possibility and the climate control unit switch.

Looks like that was it. Replaced the blower and HVAC HI 30amp fuse- now all is good. Thanks a bunch!
