removing ignition switch

How do you remove the ignition switch cover. There are 2 covers. I have removed the bottom one and cant get the top cover around the keyhole. http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p271/djkurious815/truck.jpgSee pic.

You have to turn the ignition switch to the start position and depress the pin on the top with a 90 degree pick.
When the switch comes out, you can remove the cover

Hey thanks guys. I got frustrated this morning and brought it to my local chevy dealership and they say its something busted in my transmission and I need to replace the transmission--$3000. I'm taking the truck back home and changing this ignition switch! Also, what is the "pin on the top?"

they might be talking about a GV pin its inside the bottom of tranny pan...

they might be talking about a GV pin its inside the bottom of tranny pan and pin in bottom of tranny.what happens is they get sheared..good luck.

Why are you replacing the ignition switch?

The service engine light came on and I didn't have any reverse, Wouldn't go into 4th gear (overdrive), and in 1st gear, and it would rev up to 3500 rpm's before shifting to 2nd gear.

I took it to AutoZone to get the codes read:

P0740 - TCC enable solenoid circuit electric
P0785 - 3 - 2 shift solenoid circuit electrical
P1860 - TCC PMW Solenoid circuit electrical

I did some research on this wonderful website and saw that I was not the only one with this problem.

I am confused to what the pin on top is? Can you further explain?

I looked for a pin and still no luck.

OK sounds like 2 problems.
First off, your trans isn't shift to 2nd, it is probally going into 3rd.
No reverse, 2nd or 3rd gear is the result of a broken reaction sun shell.
Typically this is not an overhaul job. With a quick pan inspection for metal, you can usually go in and replace the sun shell and call it good.
I have done this many times with no other trans problems..usually a couple hundred dollar repair....many trans guys hate me for telling you this because they want the O/H price, but not entirely necessary.
Secondly, the codes could be a result of the igniton switch, but I would check fuses first.
The pin for the ignition switch is found in a hole on the top of the column under the plastic, you will have to tilt the left side of the upper cover up and reach in there with the pick to deprss the button in the hole to release the cylinder.

Chevrolet wants 2800.00 to just replace the sun shell and the labor was 17 hours. Is this ridiculous? to replace the entire transmission was 3000.00. The sun shell price was only 48 bucks. Will transmission shops just replace the sun shell?

If you open the transmission without inspecting the rest of the components, you may be sorry later.

The sun gear and sun shell are weak points in this trans.
You must remember that every vehicle made has an inherant fault, not just GM vehicles..so you may go buy a ..(insert new car here)..and find that in a few miles something breaks that is just like any other of the same model.

Just wanted to report back and let everyone know that the sun shell was the cause of this, so I purchased a GM transmission with the 100,000 mile/3 year warranty and now it's running fine! Thanks for all the input!
