power steering

I can turn to the left as normal but when I turn to the right the pump whines and I have no power steering to turn the wheels. Is that just the pump or something else?
I was thinking when I get home to turn my wheels left and right and watch the fluid level to see if it changes when I'm turning right.
It's just I've never seen a power steeringpump go out when turning one direction.
Thanks

I would think this is something other than the pump. The gearbox itself could be bad or something is binding when you turn right.
If it was mine, I would get the front end up on jack stands and turn the wheels by hand (key on, engine off) and see if you can tell where the issue is.

Thanks, It turned out to be the gear box.
