I have a 98 olds cutlass I have read on here and searchedor my problem and I thought I had it figured out. Untill I tried to measure the resistance of the "pellet" in the kay you spoke of. I do not have a pellet!! All i have on my key is 2 little dimples one on each side. Looks juslike a spare I had made for the doors at ace hardware. Did GM use more then one security system in that year? if so which one do i have? The car runs fine to the grocery store. Come out and its dead! will not start. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes sometimes it takes 24 hours for it to start again. And when it does this not starting the theft light flashes for about 10 minutes. I have tried disconnecting the battery I have tried praying, I even tried talking to it in a real soft voice and still nothing. Anyone have any ideas? The ut the theft light stayed on untill I got home.

Welcome to AF.
You have some form of security system since you have a security light flashing. Most likely the Passlock VATS. Unlike Passkey which has the key with the resistor pellet there is no resistor on the key. The resistance value is generated by the ignition key lock cylinder and then fed to the body control module (BCM) which has the anti-theft deterrent module. When enabled you should get a no start condition where the engine doesn't crank and the fuel injectors are inhibited due to the fuel injector pulse width modulation being disabled.
Try a relearn where you leave the key in the ignition to on for at least 10 minutes and off for 30 minutes. Relearn is successful when the security light extinguishes. You may have to repeat. Other possibilities are the ignition lock cylinder or a BCM module problem.

Well I will give that a try ty for the information. Since I have a bit of a different system. What Does the anti theft "box" measure? What I am gettting as is if there is a work around like the other system where its a cheap resistor and a few butt connectors? I just want to know if you know of a way I can work around it or disable it. thanks
