Well a firned who put on my new gas tank took a look at the transmission in my 96 achieva sc, and (because it has been shuddering when shifting from 1st to 2nd) apparently my transmission is going to die soon. Anyone know where I might find one on the cheaper side of things? Or would it be better to just scrap the car? It has about 148000 miles. :banghead:

Well, consider this, if you find a used tranny with 40-60000 miles on it, you can get it for $400-800. Installation (depending on the car) at some cheap guarage is $200-400. So you're looking at 600-1200 USD for a used tranny. The thing is, will the car break down or will it keep going? Do u have experience with the car?

Check your local junk yard for parts. They sometimes give 1 year warranty on transmissions. Your car is old enough to have a few lying around in a junk yard for cheap.

What I have to consider in this situationis whether or not it is worth it to fix the car. I paid 1500 for it, and put another...let's say....400 into so far. The body is sound, and the general up keep is good. The car has never broken down, save for being out of gas. This really is the first big problem I've had, and I just seem to think the dealer took my money and ran...lol. I will look into some cheaper places for parts and work, but thank you for the reply. :)

Yeah, might as well find the cheapest tranny with a 1 year warranty that u can get. Don't replace it till it dies. My car ran with a rough shifting tranny for 70000 KM, and yours might run till the rest of the car's life. The dealers sell cars with bad trannies to people who can't feel shifting problems.
