Welcome to the forum!

What does the fluid look and smell like?

If the fluid is severely burnt, it could cause slipping or possibly too low of viscosity to properly engage clutches, etc. Of course if that is the case, the tranny is probably due for a rebuild anyway.

In an attempt to nurse the tranny a bit longer, he may want to try changing the fluid and filter, making sure to use the proper fluid for his transmission.

It seems similar symptoms were addressed on this forum recently. You may want to search the Taurus forum for keywords.

A 94 is going to use regular Mercon.

You can drop the pan and put a new filter with no problem.

i would add a bottle of Lucas to it cause quite frankly once the transmissions on these cars start acting it usually isnt long until they give it up.
