Hi,
I am a new member from Vermont, where our 4 wheel drive vehicles are mandatory in the winter and everywhere we travel, even to the grocery is quite a haul!
I developed a problem with my Tacoma that nobody seems to be able to troubleshoot. I have dumped $500.00 into attempted repairs so far to no avail. The truck has 45000 miles and is a 2.7 liter 4 cyl. The truck will intermittently idle and run extremely rough after shutting it down and restarting it 25 minutes or so later to go someplace else. It will eventually clear itself after continuing to drive the rig for a few miles or if you completed shut it down and park it for a few hours. When it is acting up the check engine light flashes which doesn't leave a code. Ocassionally it runs rough long enough that the check engine light stay on and the code says misfire on #4 cylinder. I was told it was probably plugs so I had a tune up. That did not solve it so I was told it was probably a coil. I then brought it to a dealer who switched the coil from #4 to # 1 cylinder to test. The next time it still indicated # 4 cylinder misfire. I was then told it was probably the EGR valve by the dealer which would be a warranty item but they had to make it fail first to cover it. Well I can't get it to the dealer 45 miles away before it clears. One night I left it there and they charged me 100.00 labor and found nothing. Another mechanic, non Toyota says he believes it to be a heat related injector problem and yet another syas it is an 02 sensor or TPS? I am told I have to keep throwing the most likely parts at it till I get it? This is getting expensive. Any common issues?
PS another interesting thing is when it was running bad I pulled number 4 cylinder plug wire and it stalled??? I do not believe it should have stalled?
Thanks

All I can say is run the wires. I would check the iginter circut, plug wires, and coil packs. I would also do a compression test.

I was told that the dealer checked compression and it was good and cylinders were even to??
I was going to change plug wires but there is not a plug wire but a series of stranded wires to what I am told is an individual plug mounted coil?
I am also confused as to why if the engine was misfiring on #4 already why it would stall completely when pulling the wires from# 4 coil.

Something is probably shorted, and it is just a matter of tearing into it and finding the problem. The codes just point you in a direction to start. At least your compression is good. That eliminates bad rings, valves, and a blown head gasket. What year is the truck? The early models had a distributer which was later replaced with a coil pack.

It is a 2004 with coil packs. I have looked very closely at the wiring. I do not see anything out of the ordinary. A mechanic yesterday mentioned he feels it is an injector as when it sits for 20 minutes gas leaks by causing a flooding condition. If it sits long enough the gas clears. Also that would explain why pulling the plug wire on #4 misfiring cylinder would cause it to stall. Floods?
What do you think? The truck only has 48k easy mileage on it.
Thanks
