Hey i got a 96 grand am 2.4 5-speed, I just put a new fuel pump in about 1500 miles ago and now when it gets to 1/4 tank it wont start. So i thought maybe the fuel level was off and 1/4 was really empty. But I filled it up and could only fit 8 gallons in it so the tank wasnt empty. SO i let it get to 1/4 tank again and same problem, so i sprayed starter fluid into the intake and it starts right up, ive done this 3 times now and i never have too if it above 1/4 tank. Any ideas? I appreciate the help in advance, thanks

Sounds like something was not put back together right inside the tank.
Or it could be a line is not fully conected or pinched.

Also try changing your fuel filter if you havnt already.

Did you clean out the gas tank when you replaced the fuel pump?

Could Also possibly be the fuel fump regulator
.
You'll need to rent or buy the Tool/device to check you 4cyl fuel pressure. But that would tell you if the regulators bad and causing the problems.

yup the tank was cleaned out, for the regulator are you talking about the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail cuz i have a brand new one sitting around in the garage somewhere. But the car doesnt die when it reaches the 1/4 tank it runs awesome. It idles normal, but after i shut it off it doesnt want to start normally. So i spray the starter fluid into the intake and it sounds like it barely wants to run for about 10 seconds and the idles normal and drives normal. I dont get it. Starting it at 1/4 tank is the issue running wise its awesome.

Yes the regulator on the fuel rail.

But if the fuel filter is clogged,
the extra force of the fuller tank helps push the fuel through the clog.
Then when it gets low on fuel, the pump cant pump hard enough on its own to push through the clog.

If thats not the issue(s) then either of the fuel lines in the tank could have fallen off or loose, like I said before.

other then that your injectors could be flaking out.

all my injectors are new (replaced them when i replaced the pump) and the filter is about 9 months old now so ill check that. Thanks

Well,
you probly should have said all those things were replaced before :shakehead

Also check you vacum lines and the wires to your injectors.
Make sure their are no breaks in the wiring.

Good Luck
