94 cav with bad head gasket

hey i just got a 94 cav with a 2.2 for $40 from an ex girlfriend. It has what appears to be a bad head gasket. I work at a toyota dealership and am friends with a tech, and he a kit for it to do the head gasket. He said he looked it up in the warrenty book and it said something like 9.7 hours of time to complete. Is that right? Other techs said that it takes no time at all. Any ideas........ Thanks Derek

OMG!!! $40 for a cavy? did you mean $400?

With the correct tools and the right know how I would think that it could be done in about that time. Its not much fun however. I havent done it to a Cavy but I have done it to an Altima. Good Luck!

Yes $40, it wouldnt start. I just got get it fixed and drive it for a little bit (5speed and ive never owned a stick) and then sell it. The EX put about $500 into it prior to this and she just gave up! Its in exellent shape its just... well dark purple with 125k on it.

Yep you could do it yourself with a chiltons manual and the right tools. I just took a weekend and polished it off. Saved me like $900

9.7 hours? I know that it's about a 10 hour job to do the 2.4 in the 3rd gen cars. But the 94 wouldnt have that engine as an option. The 3.1, i'm not sure, but it would take longer since it would have 2 heads.

The 2.2..... piece of cake. And not real especailly long to do. Most time consuming part would probably be taking it down to have the head machined.

I didnt need the head machined or anything, i just scraped down the head mating surfaces for a long time, and so well that i could EAT off of it, tightened down to proper torque specs, and havent lost a drop of coolant yet! :)

i thought i might be losing coolant because of a head gasket... until i realized the smoke coming from my radiator... :(

Yeah im hoping the head does not need machined. I just need to get the tech at work started on it. I bought the chiltons book so he could get the proper torques. Right now its sitting out back of the dealership with the book sitting inside just waiting to get worked on. But its hard to get done because it will have to be when the shop parts closed and the owner isnt around since hes doing it on the side. Hopefully by this weekend it will at least be started......
