Perhaps you could have gotten the answer you need in another forum on this site. Two come to mind. The first is the "Car Detailing" subforum found under the main forum "Cars In General". The second would be the "Engineering/Technical main forum. Those forums receive traffic from more members with a diverse background and may have an answer to your question.

well i've been wanting to repaint my 84 caprice white for a while now.
let me tell you, after all i've heard from other people, and read on forums and such, i think it will be a much bigger task than i originally thought. see, first you have to remove the old paint, or the new paint WILL look like shit, no matter who does it. then you have to get rid of any dents and dings, or else there is no real point in repainting. if you are using spray can based primer, then expect to use ~ 20 cans of it. same for the actual paint, but more like 25. if you have a spray gun, then it will look better, but not much if you arent skilled at it. either way, the factory paint is much thicker and better than the paint you are going to put on it in your garage, or whatever.

just a fair warning. i was all psyched to get started and after doing a little research, i probably will just save up and get it done somewhere.

if cost is the problem for you, it really isnt that bad...
the majority of the cost involved in painting a car is in prep. sanding the car down, removing the trim, masking, ect...

if you can get this stuff out of the way and drive it to the shop and have it painted and that is all, what would normally be a 2000+ dollar paint job will be more like $500, and considering that spraypaint and primer will run you about $225 you arent really saving that much, but by doing it yourself, you are getting a lot less quality.
