hi. i was recently installing a timing chain and a new head gasket on my 86 toyota pickup with the 22RE FI engine, 4X4 and automatic transmission. anyways before the head blew it could hold compression alright, being 120 in #1 and #4, where it was 150 in #2 and #3. i had the head resurfaced as it overheated before it died, and the top of the block was level, flat, and clean. i followed the torque procedure when reinstalling the head, taking my time. i properly alligned the camshaft and crankshaft at TDC #1. had everything alltogether and it wouldn't start at all. i took out the compression tester and found that all four pistons held no compression whatsoever. the needle didn't even move at all! i conducted a wet test as well and there was still no compression. no fluids are mixing or leaking, clean oil, fresh coolant, but it's just not jiving. this thing should be running like a scalded dog! anybody have any ideas? :banghead:

You can bet that your timing marks are off. Did you turn the crank over twice after installation to see if they would line back up??

yeah, i did turn it over a couple of times, and the marks still lined up. even after i tried to start it with the starter the marks still lined up.
anywho i took the head back off today. all the pistons were still undamaged (like i thought and told everybody around here.) i tested to see which valves wern't sealing and discovered that all the valves on the intake side were leaking. exhaust side is sealing perfectally (well, it's not letting any PB blaster through the seats anyways.)

head was cracked. head bolts were stretched, camshaft was off-center. one messed up head. cost 440 to replace it all.
