not getting no spark! i need help

:confused: I am not getting no spark in my 87 monte carlo . i put a new coil in , what else could it be?

If you didn't already replace your rotor, look and see if it is black in the center and allowing the spark to go directly to the distributor shaft. Sometimes they even burn a hole that is visible. Replace the module in the distributor. Anything that causes the HEI to produce maximum spark like fouled spark plugs, wires, or excessive air gap between the rotor and distributor cap will eventually cause the rotor and module failure. The very first step is make sure that you have battery voltage at the battery wire going to the distributor cap when the ignition is turned on.

The ignition module can be tested (Auto-Zone and Advance do it for free), to rule it out. Another part that can cause a no spark (including cap and rotor mentioned in previous post) is the pick-up coil. It sends the signal to the module as to distributor position so it fires the coils at the proper time. It will have two wires (usually green/white or green/yellow) that plug into one end of the module. The wire inside the insulation can break causing intermittent/no signal to the module. A digital multimeter can be used to check resistance across the two wires. 500-1500 ohms is acceptable. Make sure you wiggle the wires as you test, in case they are broken internally. If the reading jumps all over as you wiggle the wires, or the resistance is out of spec, the pick-up coil is bad.
