rattling noise

I have a 93 accord ex. When my car hits about 2 RPM's my car begins to make a rattling noise under the hood for about two to three seconds and then it stops. What could this be? Also when I was driving it today it just all of a sudden shut off on me. what the hell does that mean?

I am having a similar problem as well. At first I thought this was happening when I was driving, but I found out yesterday that I could reproduce the noise while in parking.
I would rev up the car (in parking) from idle to about 2000 RPMs, and when it gets close to 2000 RPM, I would here a rattling noise (my buddy tells me it's gargling (?) noise). Sometimes, the noise sounds like a stiff release of brakes from the rotor.
So this morning, instead of using the gas pedal, I opened the hood and played with those two wires to rev up the engine.
I was expecting to hear the noise, but couldn't hear anything wrong.
I drove to work this morning without hearing that noise at all.
So now I am wondering what to do next...
Should I wait and see if that noise comes back?
Is there any thing you guys would recommend to check under the hood?
Thanks!

BTW, my car is 2001 Accord 2DR V6 with about 91k miles.

Could it be a bad motor mount?

I'm gonna seperate these threads. Rather than bring old threads back to life, we prefer you start a new one.

As far as the rattling...I dunno what to tell you. If it isn't happening anymore, I wouldn't really worry to much about it. If it comes back or gets worse, then I'd worry. Are you sure it isn't a belt whining? Rattling could just be a loose bolt somewhere...perhaps it finally fell out. :dunno: If it disappeared and doesn't get worse, and you aren't leaking any fluids, I wouldn't worry about it at all. I mean I could toss up a bunch of really random suggestions, but nothing obvious comes to mind.

BlueBites, you aren't experiencing the intermitant loss of all power while driving, that the previous poster was, are you?

Glad to see there is at least one moderator who likes to clean up his forum!

One random suggestion: check for cracks and security of the heatshields around the cat converter and anywhere else they might be on the exhaust. They can buzz like hell sometimes.

My rattling noise still happening.

You do bring up an interesting point.
I do feel some loss of horse power but not "Total" loss though.
Feels like it takes longer to accelerate. The other day, my buddy sitting on the back told me that he thinks my exhausts are bad and they are making noises. I could not distinguish what sound he was talking about but since i drive the car everyday, unless the noise is something all the sudden, it's harder for me notice differences.

Also, I have been reading about "motor mount" issues in this board.
Yesterday, I opened the hood and reved the engine and watched the engine move.
At higher RPM, the front side of engine would tilt slightly upwards...but that seemed normal to me. I tried pushing the engine from different directions to see if i could move that thing, but the engine didn't move at all.

IS there something specific I should check (visually) regarding motor mounts and the exhausts?

Well you shouldn't be able to physically move the engine with your hands....basically no matter how worn the mounts are.

It is possible your motor mounts are a bit worn with 91k and 5 years on them, but I wouldn't think that is the rattling noise you are hearing. However, when motor mounts do start to wear out a bit and allow the engine more room to move, the exhaust flexes. If the exhaust system doesn't have proper flex sections welded into it, this flexing can put stress on teh exhaust and cause breaks in teh pipes or welds. So your friend may in fact be onto something.

Exhaust leaks basically make your engine sound louder than normal. They could cause a slight loss in power, and they could also cause a rattling noise.

Your profile says you live in Virginia. Up here in PA, when it is colder out, you can see exhaust gases pretty easily. I actually have 2 exhaust leaks as we speak, and in the morning I can lie down on the ground next to the car and look under and see the exhaust gases escaping under the car (nowhere near back out the muffler where they should be exiting). So try that. Get down by the side of the car in colder weather and see if you can visually see exhaust gas coming out anywhere under the car. Just follow the piping from teh muffler from the back to the front of the car. Got any leaks?

Got my noise problem solved finally...
I took my car to honda service center for timing belt replacement.

The noise was coming from little rocks in the heat shield.
So during stop-and-go situations, those rocks were rolling back and forth.
