Got a "97 4-cyl with 150k miles. 2 months ago it wouldn't go into 1st or OD, shop said it had faulty solenoids and rebuilt trans for $1700. After that it hit hard going into reverse from both drive and park. Shop just replaced the large front motor mount and the dogbone torque arm on the top of the engine. It went smoothly into reverse for a day but now is hitting hard into reverse again. The shop does not know what is causing the problem now. Help?

the shop doesn't know what the problem is? either do you! thats why you hired the shop because you thought they were experts. i would lean on them a little harder and tell them the transmission is not right and you paid 1700 dollars for a working rebuild. next ask them why they rebuilt a whole transmission when it only needed solenoids?

as you can tell by my tone i think this shop is giving you the run around hoping you will just live with the problem and go away.

Just checked my Haynes manual and it says nothing about rebuilding the trans to fix the solenoids or any other electrical components in the transmission. I guess I got screwed, time to raise hell tomorrow.

yeah they have to drop the pan. once that is done the solenoids are visible and can be replaced. it is done all the time on all makes of trans without a rebuild. but if there was something else wrong then that might warrant a rebuild. if something else was wrong i think they would of told you? when you go in ask to speak to the owner and try to be calm. i guess if that gets you nothing than try the B.B.B. in your area. they have resolved issues for me in the past. mike
