RB30det

I was wondering if there was a way to get an rb30det engine into a skyline (r32 r33 r34). The increased displacement would mean wonders for horsepower. Anyone have any ideas?

Are you talking about the 300ZX TT motor? I think thats called the VG30DETT. I think it has been tried, but I dont know how successfully. Try a search on these forums, I think there was a thread about it a while back.

You're in the States right? A Skyline from Motorex will probably be a GTR.....the RB26DETT is apparently a better motor all round anyway. (This argument has been had before as well).

Actually, I'm talking about the RB30DET, the 3.0L version of the RB series. I saw a couple of sites yesterday on a conversion of an R33 to the RB30, and a website on the engines of a skyline. I'll post them when I find them again.

Also, the VG30 is a great engine, but I would probably stick to the RB26 if it came down to doing high horsepower upgrades on a skyline.

OS Giken makes an RB30DETT kit for the r32, r33, and r34 GT-R's. The original RB26DETT head works in conjunction with it. Comes with the block, crankshaft, rods, pistons, rings, timing belt, head gasket, etc. Oh did I mention that it costs 1,390,000 yen! That is roughly $11,584.00. An RB30DETT conversion sounds interesting. Must put out huge HP numbers more than 400 cause the 400R uses a RB-XTT which is a 2.8L version. so the extra displacement must put it around 450 right?

There was no RB30DET, only an RB30E - in Nissans - and an RB30ET - in the VL Holden Commodore. The lack of a "D" in the name means it's SOHC and 2 valves per cylinder. The conversions that are done with this engine involve fitting a twin cam RB head (from an RB26DETT or RB25DET, usually) to the RB30E or usually RB30ET block. Big big torque, apparently, but they don't really like revving as much as the smaller RBs

hp is a function of torque and revs, so the hp potential of a smaller displacement, higher revving engine is not that different (I think) from a larger-displacement engine that doesn't rev as high. They just make the power in different ways.

I don't know about the rb30 not being able to rev high. One of our customers cars with rb30det conversion has seen the high side of 9000 many times. Turns 9.43 @ 150 in the quarter, still can't get traction though:D

Sure it can rev, just not as comfortably. Particularly stock, it just won't rev like an Rb20 or RB26 - probably not even as freely as an RB25. But when worked - as your customer's one clearly is - of course it can. Just think though, with a similar level of engineering goiing into it, what an RB26 would rev to: high 10 or 100,000 :D

yup, I think that the 2.6L could certainly see the high side of 10g's:eek: Boy that just makes me horny thinking about the wonderful sound. I must go now. :o :D

Isn't there some problem with vibrations of some sort?

:confused: Seem to remember reading that some were, SDU perhaps.

Some of the biggest problems is the lack of oil squirters for the underside and short skirts of the pistons.
another short fall is the rather dismal cradle that the VL blocks have. It has been a good upgrade for those not wanting to spend a heap for an RB26DETT block which is nearly double the price.

The RB30 block is also not as strong in the long run. They have a tremendous amount of torque. I know of a an R33GTS25T with that conversion. RB30 block with an RB26 head. He is running high flowed factory turbos, bigger injectors, front mount and link wire in ecu. He has a heap of torque and being rwd it is probably fun to drive in the wet when boost comes on.

How's the torque off boost?

I don't know numbers, but I've heard that it lights up the tyres in 5th gear on the motorway in the dry :eek: :eek:

If your talking about price you can pick up an RB26 N1 block for about $3,000 NZD or about $1,500 USD.

Yep that motor is bloody torquey ! It is not producing huge hp only about 480hp at the crank but that fact when it does come on boost it is putting just over 650 ft bls of torque to the wheels.
