I recently bought a 89 escort 1.9 carb. When i bought the car i was told it had a blown head gasket for 200 bucks that was no big deal. replaced the head gasket but still loosing fluid from tail pipe. But right now that is the least of my concerns. It had been driving great till a couple of days ago when it lost all power when accelerating. I did the typical tune up, fuel filter and still no power. i was told that it could be the catalytic converter. Any one have any ideas on either.
Thanks

Do a compression check.
What fluid are you losing in the exhaust? Coolant? Oil?
You possibly have a cracked head or cracked block, or maybe just rings... a compression check is a good place to start and will also give you answers to your loss of power.

I am loosing coolant out of the tail pipe. This weekend I am going disconnect the cat and see if that takes care of the power problem.

If the head gasket was just replaced and you are still losing coolant through the exhaust, you likely have a crack in the head, which may also be causing a loss of compression and loss of power.
You might want to try the compression test before you start disconnecting things.

I agree I may have a cracked head. I am replacing it the first of the year. Well I went ahead and cut out the cat and it fixed my no guts issue. Actually it is running better now then when i bout it.
However I am having issues with the car not blowing alot of heat. I changed the thermostate and checked the fluids and the switch to change from cold to hot in the car and all of those are good. I also made sure the ac was not on and still it is only blowing warm air. Do you guys have any suggestions on that.
Thanks

its possible some one has put a lot of block seal in the radiator trying to fix the leak and stopped up the heater core you can try some real good radiator flush and run the heater so it flows thru the heater core or you can diconnect both heater hoses and flush with garden hose just dont over do it on pressure you can rupture the core, DO NOT USE COMMPRESSED AIR ! It is a nightmare to replace the core . good luck !
