Strange headlight problem...

'97 C1500 5.7L...

The daytime running lights work fine. When you turn the lights to parking, you get headlights (daytime running) and parking lights but when you turn them all the way on, the headlights actually go off!!!

I actually got them to work last night for a while, but I don't know what I did other than jack with the parking brake.

Is it the switch or a wiring problem...???

Wes: It could be several things. From your description, the 1st thing I would do is replace the DRL relay as the low beams go thru that relay and it's cheap. The relay is located in the convenience center which is behind the park brake pedal and is in the bottom center position. If that doesn't help then answer these ?'s

1. Do the DRL's go off when you set the park brake and come back on when you release it?

2. Do the high beams work ok?

Post back and I'll give you more detailed info if you need it.........Steve

When the lights are on, the high beams are great...

Here's an update! I can get them to work when I pull the tilt wheel all the way down with some force. As soon as I release it upwards, the lights go off. I think when I was messing with the parking brake, I must have bumped the steering wheel causing the lights to come on. Hmmm...

I'm guessing it's a wiring problem in the column...what do you guys think?

Ignition switch. I had to put one in my 95 for other lighting problems. See if they come on when wiggling the key. Please post results.

I HAVE THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM!!! CAN"T FIGURE IT OUT!! I guess I'll try the relay and post back, but I hate to waste money on a relay if I don't need one. We'll see!

Unfortunately the truck also has transmission problems, so it's parked right now, so I don't get to jack with it on a daily basis, but I may go out there and try the "wiggle the key" method to see if that works.

It wouldn't surprise me if it were the ignition wiring. I've already had to replace that once in the truck's life...
