Rear door lock

Still havent got it running yet but will run modus test on it tonight. While I am thinking of it though. Is the rear door suposed to be openable without the key. In other words once it is unlocked can you open it without the key. The little lock handle says lock one way and gate the other. I had the panel off to put some new speakers in, everything looked to be working smoothly etc. Mine will only open if you insert the key every time. No biggy but a pain as I use the van for work. If I forget to not latch it when I close it the next time I go back for tools I have to unlock it again. If I leave the keys in it and its cold and rainy then the lock gets moister in it and will freeze that night, or a kid can, and has grabbed the keys and walked off with them.
Had to have my girl freind bring me the spare keys, kid finally admited to taking them about a week later, after mother found them in his room. Parents said I should not have left them there. I say parents should teach their kids not to touch, play in or around vehicles theirs or someone elses!
Thanks Harold

I understand this is a follow up to your thread "92 APV not starting" http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=4505900#post4505900
It is best to keep the same thread alive so readers can follow the logic
Indeed Harold this handle has its own moods....in my case (a 1993) it has begun asking for the keys even after I unlock it with electric door unlock...have to go with the key: turn handle with the key in...then if remove key... I could not do it again...needs the key in and turned. Now this is rather new, worked OK until recently...and it would still work normally occasionally.
I will innundate it with WD 40, operate it 100 times both ways..and see what happens next.....
