$1000 upgrade project

120k, all original (minus few scraches)
No mods as of yet.

I set aside $1K to increase power of my g20.
my check list:
1) Air filters
2) Plugs and wires
3) Exost
4) If any money left, wax the darn car...

As I will get this done I will take snap shots of each mod so that the progress can be viewed and repeated by other beginners like me:alien:
Any help will be welcome.

I am looking at few air options:

1) Hi Flow filter (only)
a) HKS
b) K&N (seen in the store but not online...)
c) Stillen
d) Toucan
2) CAI
a) HKS
b) Stillen

So far I ruled out HKS as it needs smaller battery for cold air intake, stillen does not mention that, but it also may be the case.

I have looked in my engine compartment and I see that air box on the opposite to manifold end has a sleaf that ends behind driver side head light.
Originaly I though to install air filter leaving lower part of air box intact. So that any dirt off airfilter would fall into it and it would be easier to keep engine compartment clean

In case I install CAI I will not have to worry about anything. On the other hand if I will put open high flow air filter by it self I wounder if it will have enough air to pull as there are not may ways for air to get inside engine compartment unless i am going fast already.

(Please, anyone, correct me if I'm wrong here in my explanation), the difference between a regular Air Intake and a Cold Air intake is just that. The cold air intake is going to be long and curved to put the filter at the bottom of the engine bay where the cool air rushes under the car, pulling cold air to the engine give it slightly more horses, as opposed the the warmer air inducted through the regular intake. However, there is no air restrictions with a regular air intake, as the bottom of the engine bay, as well as the large gap in your bumber, and in your grill, give AMPLE air flow to a regular air intake. The difference is the air at the top of your engine is going to be hot compared to the air flowing underneath your car. But either way, you're going to have the same amount of air available for the filter, the difference is the teperature....

if it is just cold air then i can leave my lower part of air box with piping in place, this will channel colder air from front to the filter without heating up on the way. also i would disagree about much cooler air under the car... it is true while you are moving but defenetaly wrong when you are not. I live in NY and normal driving here is mostly in trafic, stop and go style. Also I am concerned about winter, as it is moist and dirty during that time.

What if I combine small electrical blower (side of battery by the bumper. same place where original piping ends) and original intake piping + cone K&N filter?

by the way, where can I buy original k&n filter and what should i look for when I buy it? will it work with any adapter or do i have to get a specfic one for k&n?
