ALMS – Prodrive Ferrari Enters Petit Le Mans

Indianapolis, Ind., Aug. 31 — The American Le Mans Series announced today that Prodrive, a renowned British racing organization most well known for its championship-winning teams in the World Rally Championship and the British Touring Car Championship, will enter a Ferrari 550 Maranello in the GTS class for the upcoming Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta on Oct. 6.

The car will be driven by Swede Rickard Rydell, a former BTCC champ, Dutchman Peter Kox and a third driver to be named later. The duo scored the team’s first FIA GT win last weekend at Austria’s A1-Ring in a sister to the car that will race at Petit Le Mans.

Dave Price, the former team manager for Panoz Motor Sports, is assisting with the Prodrive effort for the Petit Le Mans. He indicated that the ALMS foray is in effect an effort to sell copies of the Ferrari for use in America.

"We believe that America will be a big market for us," he said, adding that several potential customers will be on hand to examine the car and team at Road Atlanta.

Price added that the team’s third driver at Petit Le Mans will likely be an American, and that he has several candidates in mind.

The addition of the Ferrari will certainly be a shot in the arm for the GTS class, home to big-bore production-based coupes in the ALMS. Although lightly subscribed, the class has featured some intense battles between the works Corvette C5-Rs and the Saleen S7R, plus privately entered Dodge Viper GTS-Rs.

This will be the first appearance of a Ferrari in the ALMS since early in 2000, when several of the famed Italian marque’s 333SPs competed in the headline LMP900 class.

This should be interesting...I wonder who will break down first, Saleen or Ferrari?:)

Thats the great thing about Ferraris and Saleens though! When they break down, you still have time to repair them before the Chevy's catch up! :cwn27: :cwn27: :cwn27: :cwn27:

Or you can have the best of both worlds, reliability and speed. In a Porsche.
