This my first post on here as I am a newby. What I would like to know is what makes the transmission shift into OD. I have tried adjusting the switch on top of the trans and that makes no diff. This thing run's about2600-2800 rpm to run 50 mph and uses gas like a pig. My wife drove it all the time and I just sold my p-up and got her a new Escape, now I have to drive the Taurus wagon to and from work. It's about 20 miles one way and I am using a 1/4 tank of gas a day to go to work and back. Heck my 5.4 F-150 wasn't that bad!!! Thank's in advance

Welcome to the forum!

I assume you are referring to your 1997 Taurus. Do you know which transmission your car has (either AX4S or AX4N)? Also, which engine does your Taurus have (12V Vulcan or 24V Duratech)? Is the "OD OFF" indicator in the instrument cluster on or off?

Rod Yes I am referring to the 97-Taurus and I beleive it has an AX4N trans, it is the Vulcan engine, and there is no "OD OFF" indicator in the dash, never was and I have owned this thing since new. I had the trans scanned last nite and it show's a "C" clip error on the spool in the valve body. Can this be fixed without removing the trans? Thank's Tim

I had a 1993 Taurus SHO ATX that didn't go into overdrive. There was an e-clip on the OD solenoid that broke and prevented the tranny from shifting into overdrive. If the layout of the transmission in your 1997 has not changed much since my old 1993, it can be replaced without removing the transmission. You'll need about $0.17 for a new e-clip.

I found the procedure on the SHOtimes forum, and it was documented pretty well. Took me a couple of hours which included the time to take photos and take the remnants of the broken clip to the hardware store to match up a replacement.

You're welcome. If you are curious what it looks like, I have some low resolution photos of what it looked like and where it was located on my 1993 SHO.

Send me a private message with an e-mail address for you that can accept JPG attachments. They were taken years ago on my 0.9 MPixel camera, so they are small files.
