I was looking into buying a 1998-2002 Camaro SS or a 1998-2002 Camaro z28. I plan on moding the car out to street race it. Is there a major difference between the cars. Im hoping to buy one with the LS1 in it.

essentialy a Z28 was a Camaro with a V8, it also had posi. the SS started life a s a Z28, and they threw a hood, spoiler, 17 inch rims, a better flowing muffler, and slightly different suspension components on. all SS's are Z28's
all 98-02 ss or z28 are ls1 cars
all 98-02 ss or z28 are ls1 cars

Yeah, just get a Z28, it will be cheaper. Unless you just really like the look of the SS. But like Gold said, the SS is just a little better from the factory, but if you plan on modding it, both cars are the same except for looks.

The 98-02 Trans Am/ WS6 has the Ls1 as well.
The WS6 package for the Firebird is the same as the SS package for the Camaro.
The Firebird/TA/WS6 weighs more than the Camaro/Z28/SS.
Other than looks, the Pontiac is not really that different from the Chevrolet.

however, if you dont wanna go through the hassle of changing springs, rear ends (prolly will if you wanna seriously drag it), rollbars and a bunch of other things, make sure you do look into Ss's..sometimes they're cheaper. (like in my case:D)

Track is always a better idea but sometimes when the prospect of ripping up some street pavement presents itself. It is very difficult to not let your poor decision making skills take over for a little bit.

I'm inocent, I swear I am ... he was going slow, I went out to pass him, he rolled into it, I rolled into it, next thing I know I'm doing 120 mph ... and looking at him thru the rear view mirror! my friend that was riding with me was like WTF was that, I replied win #1 for the T/A ... sometimes you just gotta play even if you have no intention of playing!

I know 97 was the last year for the 'RS' package from GM, but why does my '98 owners manual specifically refer to the 'RS' car?

Because they were lazy and didnt feel like changing it.

97 Was the last year for the Camaro RS.
wrong :slap: . RS was released again in 2000, built by SLP. it had the 3.8 v6 but with the Z28's exhaust system which they say added 5hp. also had stripes, RS badges, and a blacked out bowtie grill insert. optional were ss style 16x8 rims and larger front and rear swaybars off the LS1 cars.

there was no rs between 97 and 2000. any camaro from 98-02 (except the SS and other special editions) could be ordered with the sport apperance package which was the ground effects and RS style spoiler. the new 2000-2002 RS did not have ground effects.
