I went to the track once, it was a blast. I think I even post a vid of it. Kinda sucked because I used my Nikon L2 camera and not a video camera.

I haven't been to the track in a while but have been many times. Just hard to find the time and I always like to make sure everything is in perfect shape before trying to break something :smooch:. Why you thinking that 14.7 is better than the rest of us? :)

Haven't been to the track yet. I kinda want to go but its not a top priority. Plus, I don't want to break something or get my ass beat by a $500 ricer with a fat turbo...actually I really don't care. I might find some time to go next summer.

no more chance of breaking something at the track than at the street really unless you drive liek a grandma everywhere

Completely not true. You put at least 10 times the amount of stress on things like rears , driveshafts , tranny's bearings, pistons, rods and so on and so on. If you drive on the street like you do on the track you will most likely not have a license or a car very long...

mmf. damn, my friend with a STi told me when he goes track (went, track i should say..) he would rev it to almost redline then dump....

damn awd cars :(

Mr. Luos
12-12-2006, 08:58 PM
That works on a mostly stock STi.
But...eventually something will break. That is a good amount of stress on the car.

i know a girl that got an STI for christmas last year. after 300miles she went out street racing and blew the motor. Her dad was pissed and would not pay for another engine. she had to pay $9,000 for a new engine.

97cavalier
12-12-2006, 11:44 PM
yea she probly did not know how to shift or race and redlined it, that will blow it soon on a new motor, or any motor.

i have a buddy who used to do stupid stuff, though at least it was on crappy cars that werent really worth much... he used to neutral bomb his automatic in his late 80's mercury sable because it would chirp the tires a little... lol he called me up one day and was like "when i press the gas, it just revs up and then it finally catches and goes." i just told him he was an idiot :-)

In most cases....it does.
Although not if you run it dry in oil. Racing a stock car will not void warrenty.

What kinda stupidity? What did she do?

she blew the motor in a street race so subaru voided her warrenty. subaru used to include an SCCA membership when u bought a WRX or STI (don't know if they still do) and if you have a problem with the car after racing, they void the warrenty. a friends brother has a WRX and the trannies are from the rs impreza so if you speed shift it u risk damage. he did that, took it to the dealer and they would not cover the damage under warrenty.

If you want to do some racing in a stock car at least put a rev limiter on the thing.

Mr. Luos

New cars in stock form SHOULD have one.

speaking of rev limiters, cant a person put one on a carbed motor somewhere in the distributor? i need to put one on the 383 im building for my truck. i have heard that they only are good for 5500 rpm due to the 400's crank that they use which is 3.75 inch stroke. is this true that they are only good for 5500 measily rpm? if its usually a valvetrain issue, then i have that covered because my cam specs call for peak power at about 6000 rpm. i dunno if my crank can take it though, its a "cat" (not skat) nodular iron crank with i have no idea what kind of rods and hypereuctetic speed pro flat tops. i bought the shortblock assembled so i havent looked to see if the rod bolts are arp or not. any ideas as to how many rpms this mother trucker can run at?

wrightz28
12-20-2006, 10:19 AM
I'm pretty sure most MSD ignition control boxes have a slot for a rpm limitation "chip" much the same as what Nascar uses.

Earlsfat
12-20-2006, 02:34 PM
As bad as I would like to take RD to the track, I would be severely depressed with an ET of approximately 2.8 hours. (lol... I can't push it that fast.)

Oh and yeah, your ignition box should have a rev limiter on it, unless you really cheaped out and got a blue-light special that doesn't have one. I know MSD's have them, and I'm pretty sure Mallory, Pertonix both have them too. Have no idea about the others, or if a distributor will have some sort of a rev limiter function on it. (Never heard of that before, but that doesn't mean much.)

jveik
12-22-2006, 04:23 PM
does this apply to h.e.i. distributors? my distributor has the coil in the cap and whatnot, im not too knowledgeable about the ignition circuit as you guys can tell. mine (before i took the vehicle apart to the frame for a resto) was just the coil in cap h.e.i. so i bet it would have thrown a rod if i gave it a bunch of gas in neutral... how does a rev limiter like the ones you guys describe work, it just will only send "sparks" (for lack of a better word) to each cylinder up to a certain rate and wont go any faster than a certain threshhold the driver sets it to?

hotrod_chevyz

HEI Rev limiter = let your foot off the gas.

Im staying away from the track until I reach 400HP. Less than that why bother. I dont know about anybody else but im not buying a spot in line just to look stupid.

The T/A should make its track debut early next summer. It will be the first time in its life it will be worth the hour drive to the track. I Hope to get it on video, i expect to be well into the 13's using a built 400/400 pontiac in a third gen.

I drive over to thunder valley raceway from time to time to watch drag races, if they have some dragsters like the federal moguls or something worth paying to see. I also go to the oklahoma state fair speedway to watch the roundy rounds sometimes. I used to be at the speedway every weekend for several years until edwards bought the track and got rid of the half mile. When mike owned lincoln county raceway i was there every weekend to for years. After he sold the track and they hired a new crew i stopped going but maybe twice a year. Both of those two places is a VERY good place to buy second hand race parts. Especially if your into SBC's. All you have to do is wander the pits and talk around, figure out whos selling what.

jveik
12-25-2006, 12:02 AM
so basically, an HEI rev limiter is essentially "dont let your friends drive your hot rod EVER because they dont give a shit if they over-rev someone elses car." that must be why so many dudes have those rediculously huge tachometers so they can judge when to shift

hotrod_chevyz
12-25-2006, 12:23 AM
Its never a good idea to hand over the keys to a high powered car to a person not familiar with it. So im saying yeah pretty much if you have a car that revs through gears pretty quick dont let people drive it, especially if they like to go fast. this applys to vehicles with or without a limiter.

I think most people have a tach because they think its cool. I got mine cause i thought I needed it, but it pretty much just takes up space. I know to shift when the hair on my neck starts to stand up.

jveik
12-26-2006, 12:43 PM
yeah that feeling that "this heffer's gonna throw a rod if i rev it any higher so id better shift up now"
