My car is 1991 CIVIC DX hatchback with D15B2 (or maybe D15B1)engine. I can not find the EGR valve under the hood. I do get a picture of 1991 civic EGR from internet. But it does not look like any thing in my car. And I heard some Civic model just do not have an EGR. Is my car not with an EGR?:banghead:

My E-test failed. HC and CO is ok. Only NOx is a little high. I searched a lots and mostly is saying that related to EGR.

Thanks.

If you do have one, it's easily located. It will be a big black box with a diaphragm on the passenger side of the intake manifold next to the distributor.

I dont think dx/ std engines had an EGR valve. I think only HF's had them. If your Nox is high check your timing, it might be too far advanced so you can try retarding it. Also you might be running rich, so check your 02 sensor, replace if its old (over 100k). You also may have to replace your cat. Do an oil change and minor tune up, and take it back for smog. Keep the car running long before the test and dont turn it off.
PS: What was your Nox reading? How high was it?

Thanks for all your help. The NOx limit is 864. And my first test result is 1068. I added something calls GTP and got a worse result for about 1164. Then I retard the timing and got 924. It still failed.
I believe there is no EGR with this car. As my HC and CO is not bad so it unlikely to be cat's problem. I'll try to replace the O2 sensor.
Another thing I noticed is I never see my cooling fan runs even in hot summar. I only saw one time the coolant temperature raised above the middle of the metre as the water pump out of work. I'm also going to find out the relay to force the fan keep running to lower the coolant temperature.

Here I attached a link to two pictures, one is EGR for D15B2 engine.http://ca.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/strong_q/detail?.dir=69cescd&.dnm=f4fescd.jpg
One is a pictured taken of my car. The D15B2 engine is on the left side and the distributor is on top left. http://ca.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/strong_q/detail?.dir=69cescd&.dnm=250bscd.jpgSo it likes no EGR there.

I'm not sure the linked image can correctly showed here or not. Here is the URL: http://ca.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/strong_q/album?.dir=69cescd

Try changing your pcv valve, and make sure your keeping engine temps low. If you car is running hot, with high combustion chamber temperatures, your Nox level will be high.

You don't have an EGR.

I know the original post has been almost 1 years old. I hoping the original poster is still around to tell me how you eventially passed your e-test. I currently have the exact same problem as you on my 90 Civic Dx. NO reading is 3500 ppm, while the limit is only 856. However, CO and HC are within limits. Did changing the O2 sensor do the trick?

Start another thread, you'll get more help that way.
