security light on dash

97 chev lum car, security light on dash come on and stays on, car starts and works fine been on for the last 3000 kms, presuming a key resistance problem but this normally turns of injectors and stops car running any suggestions on why its on and how to get it off would be greatly apprieciated.

Needs to be scanned with a highline full function scanner for body/vats codes.

I currently have the same issue with a '96 for that last 4 month. I tried cleaning the key and the ignitiion socket, but need to reset the light to see if it returns. I'm eagerly waiting to see if any others ran into this similar problem.

Let me know what you find...mines been coming and going randomly for two years....usually pops on when I'm driving down the highway, stays on a few miles and then goes out. But sometimes will be on right from a start.

AFAIK, you should have a PassKey II system, not a PassLock. The systems are considerably different.

There is nothing to be done to the BCM to "reset" the SECURITY lamp. Insert the correct resistance key, and make sure the module reads the resistance, and the light will go off.

If the light turns on while driving, 99-44/100% of the time it is a connection issue between the lock cylinder and module. If that happens to randomly occur while the engine is not running, you'll be locked out.

You have described my problem exactly. Security light comes on sometimes while driving but goes out. Other times the car will not crank but everything seems to be okay. I can get out and start the car for a few seconds by "hot wiring" the starter with the key in the on position. After a little while it cranks up and goes. Odly enough this seems to happen the most in cooler weather.....any ideas?

Scanning the system should show an error code, at least WHILE the lamp is on, and possibly even a stored code in some years. However, to my knowledge, there is no "resetting" the code via the data bus. The correct key resistance is all that will work.

Since it is intermittent, the contacts in the ignition lock cylinder, the wire harness at the lock cylinder (very fine, frail wires), and the connector at the base of the steering column are suspect. Other connections could be involved, but those are the more common ones I've found.

Blue Bowtie you nailed the problem. I replaced the ignition lock cylinder and that cured all ills. Thanks for your advice. You hit a home run.
