Tamiya Ferrari 360 Spider

Here's another straight-from-the-box buildup, Tamiya's Ferrari 360 Spider.

I had a great time building this one. It really falls together nicely -- much better than the Modena version, from what I understand.

Looks very nice-and yes it does fall together, unlike my particular hardtop...though perhaps later versions of the hardtop may have better fitting glass, as some report it does fall together easily. Mine was a comedy of errors, it turned out well but it aged me 5 years getting it finished!

I had much more fun building the Spider!

Diffrence between 360 modena and 360 spider is = ?

360 Modena is a coupe. 360 Modena Spider is a convertible.

The kits differ in a couple of areas. At least on my 360 Modena coupe, the side glass, rear glass, headlight covers, and taillights were all too large and had to be sanded/scraped to fit. It was as if the entire tree was a certain percentage too big. It was a very atypical Tamiya experience!

They redesigned the headlight and taillight mounting procedure on the Spider, making the headlight cover w/a small lip for mounting on the inside of the body rather than having an exposed glue joint on the edge, and the headlight buckets are separate. The taillights glue to separate mounts and mount from inside the body, whereas the coupe the taillights mounted from outside onto flat recesses in the taillight panel on the body. All clear parts, along with all the rest of the kit, fit brilliantly.

You may have noticed that a lot of the cars I've posted here lately have been silver. I was on a real kick for a while trying to find a combination of paints that would give a realistic finish.

I think with this model I finally hit on it. The silver is SnJ Spray Metal, an airbrush-only paint that's normally used for aircraft. (It's available at http://www.snjmodelproducts.com/). Unlike a lot of metallic finishes, it dries really hard -- you can handle it and mask over it without damaging it. The only problem is that it's a little dull all on its own. When it was dry, I airbrushed on a coat of Testor high-gloss clear to give the finish some shine and depth.

Hey! I've work with silver paints and it's always a problem, the metal flicks comes off together with masking..........and the surface is always not as smooth as i wish it to be.

I found that Tester Silver gives to best shine. How does SnJ silver compare to Tester?? You did a great job with your surface, how did you make it so smooth?? I try adding Tester Super Clear to the silver hoping it'll come out better........but still not as good as yours......
