Cruise control button will not remain on

'99 Grand Am SE, the three cruise control buttons are located on the pod beneath the steering wheel. The cover of the pod came off and the On/Off button came out when the airbag blew because of a minor collision. What I'm asking, does there appear to be anything missing from the button? When I reinstall the button it will not stay on. It has power and the cruise works if I hold the On/Off button down. I cannot figure out what is supposed to make the button detent and stay in/on. It kinda looks like there may have been a small peice of plastic on top of the metal pin at one time but I have not found one in the wrecking yards that look any different from mine.

Maybe someone could pop the pod cover off theirs and snap a pic so I can compare it to mine?

its not suposed to come apart :nono:

it works like an ink pen that you push the top, and it locks the pen out then you push again and it goes back in.
Kinda works like that.

WHen the air bags are set off you usually always have to replace that entire part with new buttons ,
sometimes the kit includes the volume control button if you have that option.
Dealer parts, though some body shops can order them for you and cheaper.

Someone else had this same problem with thier Alero, which is the same as a GA, I never heard what they did to fix it other then replacing it.

the spring loaded part did not come apart, the grey plastic button came off the clear peice and easily goes back together. When assembled into the pod the brass pin shown in the pic appears to be missing a peice that makes the button detent operate.

did you check your floorboards for the pieces?
It does look like a part or two is missing.... :dunno:

Probly have to try and find a used unit(the hole pod assembly w/all3 buttons) at a salvage yard or ebay.
Dealer would be the last place :headshake:

I was hoping somebody could post up a pic of one so I could get an ida of how to make the peice that is missing.

I doubt its fixable though.

I'm a "jerry riggin" fool and I couldnt get mine rigged to work without replacing the whole damn unit.

I'll look around the shop and see if I have any parts of that laying around. Pretty sure I shit canned them along time ago, but I'll look anyway!

thanks, I've been making parts work on cars since the seventies, my dad was a master at it and he taught me.

finally found a switch out of a later model. The tiny black three armed device is what ultimately controls the detents. The switch I got looks exactly like mine except that the pin the black peice pivots on is plastic and mine appeared to be brass. One other thing, I had to install the black peice on my old switch as the newer one would not quite function in my pod. here are two pics to compare to what mine above looked like
