92 Geo and 99 Malibu Same Problem

I currently own a 1992 Geo that I am experiencing the same problems I had out of a 1999 Malibu. It started as a slightly noticeable hesitation one morning, but by the evening drive home left me with my blinkers on a mile from home. The engine acted as if it simply would not take gas. When the pedal was pushed it would make a muffled sound in the engine and lose complete power.
The Malibu I owned did the exact same thing a few years back. At first, the service light came on and then a total loss of power. It happened close to an Advance Auto so I pulled in and had them check the service light. Came back with Mass Air Flow sensor – changed it in the parking lot and it started up and ran fine, for a day. Then same problem – thought it was a bad sensor and traded out and it ran fine for a week. Then it died at the supermarket late one evening and I left it sit and came back for it the next day. The car started up and ran fine all the way home. I took it to the dealership several times and they could never pin point the problem, it was not consistent and would never do the exact problem while a mechanic had the vehicle. It was too risky to drive so I gave it away to someone fully aware of the problems.
Back when gas was well over $3 a gallon I bought this little Geo since I live in a rural area and drive an hour to and from work. I have made a nice little investment in the engine and so on and to date have only logged about 10,000 miles. Now after leaving the vehicle unable to move the night before, I go back the next morning and it starts right up. It has the same slight hesitation that it had the morning before, but drives happily down to a local mechanic. He has it all day and reports back to me that he has had it running at different times all day, and just like the Malibu, cannot find anything wrong. The only difference in the scenarios is that the Malibu happened in the summer and the Geo in the winter. The other difference is that I just over invested in this little 50mpg gas miser and will not be as eager to part with it as I did the Malibu. Hopefully someone out there can help me out.
