there is a switch in my 1997 chevy cavalier z24 just left of the interior dome light control. the switch has an orange dot that glows when in the up position, and it is blank otherwise. does anyone know what it does? because i cant seem to find the answer elsewhere.

many cars come with rear fog lights as well, that are embedded in the tail lights. all cars in europe must have rear fog lights. i didnt know if the cavalier does. but thanks anyway for being an asshole, too bad you just sound stupid now.

j_nelson07

i know what reverse lights are. these are not. these illuminate the red lights in back brighter than what they usually are. they are called rear fog lights. they are not white like the front fog lights.

I don't know who to root for...but he's right, they do make cars with rear fog lights, they're a stupid invention b/c they do the same as reverse lights, but none the less.... oh I have them too, but they also come out the sides......they're in NEON form :)

Interesting... This is the 2nd Cavy thread I've seen mysteriously move to the f-body section...
If I had the power to move it back for you, I would. But I don't... lol

There's no mystery about the move to the Camaro section if you use your mod tools, Blue Bowtie moved it.

That was MY error.
I originally found the thread in the wrong forum, and intended to move it to the Cavalier Problem Diagnosis Forum (where it belongs). Instead, I inadvertently moved it to the F-Body Problem Diagnosis Forum instead of one of the 12,568 other choices I had. My apologies for any confusion this may have created.
Thank you Gold-Z for returning it to the correct forum. As for the rest of you, read the posting rules again to refresh your memories. We can disagree, but must remain within the rules in doing so.
As for the root of the disagreement, rear fog lights ARE standard equipment on many vehicles sold in the U.S., and even those made in the U.S. and Canada. Some Buicks and Oldsmobiles had them as early as 1996, and they weren't even integrated into the tail lamp housings but occupied a spot in the rear bumper cover all by themselves.
As for those front lights under the bumper, they are technically "driving lights", and in the typical North American form, they are useless, plastic lensed, low wattage, poorly beam-controlled pieces of ornamentation, more a part of an optional trim package than anything useful as a fog lamp. There is no upper beam cutoff as required for a true fog light. By the time the cheap plastic lenses are only a year old, there is so much diffusion that light is scattered everywhere. I suppose they might be good in the event you were to drop your keys or wallet in front of the car, but beyond that are mostly a nuisance to other drivers, essentially useless to the vehicle operator as a light source, and about as refined as a 36" chainsaw in a surgical room.
But that's just my opinion. No one has to agree.

well my point on this is that the back lights are not even used in fog, or any time at all when the car is moving forward, only when the car is in reverse so i call them reverse lights not fog lights cuz they are not used in fog, unless you are driving backwards in fog. lol

Walk away quietly JStumpalump150,not used for backing in fog . They are a brighter red more likely so you can be seen from the rear sooner. not to be confused with the white backup/reverse lights

these are the lights that i was talking about, sorry for the confusion but if you follow my logic you dont drive with these lights on and they do not make the brake lights shine better, they are just used for backing up. i was un aware of the brake lights shining brighter and those being called fog lights but i guess that makes sense too

The main thing is when someone asked a question don't make them feel like an idiot. Have them reword the question if it makes no sense,or elaborate.

So what you are saying is that they are completely useless. If you are driving in weather that is bad enough were you need "rear fog lights" you shouldnt be driving that fast anyways where you could rear end someone because you didnt have enough time to see his tail lights. They are just brigth tail lights. I wouldnt pay any extra money for them. All they do is help other people. And if you get rear ended in bad weather its not your fault so who cares. Thats what insurance is for.

"If YOU are driving in weather that is bad enough were you need rear fog lights you shouldn`t be driving that fast anyways where YOU could rear end some one because YOU didn`t have enough time to see his tail lights."
Who says it is the guy with rear fogs is the one driving to fast, maye it`s the other guy with or without them. For some reason or other alot of people are in a big hurry nowadays and there are others who are not .As for not being out there in it sometimes people /tourists get caught up in it and do not know where to get off the highway .
" And if you get rear ended in bad weather it`s not your fault so who cares"
That`s like your the guy that goes thru an intersection with the right of way and gets run over by the guy that has the stop sign but for some reason, opps failed to stop. You are right it`s not your fault but your dead anyway. Everyone ends up paying more in the long run for accidents . Your premiums may stay the same this year and you may never have a wreck but sooner or later the rates go up . As for not wanting them that is your choice of course but if some one sees you a second or two sooner it may make all the difference in whether you get slight bump or creamed, driven into the guy a head or oncoming traffic.

im sorry typo. you should not being driving that fast in bad weather were someone else would need the rear fogs. I am a very aggressive driver and have been in two accidents neither of which were my fault. Rear fogs would not have prevented either. I always pay more attention to the other idiots driving than mine. that helps me out. and people on the highway... thats why i drive in the left lane so i dont have to worry about them. i get over when i know where my exit is. which is about 99% of the time.
