Hey guys im new to this forum and i just wanted to say hi and that i'm having a problem with my 1993 trans am. Well i bought this car 2 months ago and everything was fine until saturday, Well i was driving and i saw my voltage gauge begin to slowly drop well i first thing i did was change the altenator but then i noticed that the old altenator had a extra wire on the back. Well i go and take a look at my bro's 95z28 and i come to find out that mind did not have the voltage regulator harness attached. My car came with a custom sound systems and i guess for some reason they cut the harness. Well now i'm stuck and i don't know what to do?

Go to any gm dealer and buy the pigtail and just connect it to the hanging wire that was cut. BTW, you might also consider upgrading to the 140AMP 94+ Alt if you have some aftermarket electrical items added on.

So that should take of the problem? Do you know why they would delete the voltage regulator? I was looking at a 200amp alt, would that be good enough? the car has about 3,000 amps running through it, It has 2 optima batteries.

You must mean watts. cause if you had 3000 amps draw you would need about 12 car batterys. Yes the dealer pigtail will solve the regulator problem as long as the regulator is working. No idea why they would remove it unless it accidently fell off after becoming frayed , which happens with some of those thing harness wires. I know I am going to have to put a new IAC pigtail on my car soon because of this happening there.

I forgot to mention that the altenator the car had before didn't have a voltage regulator.

so, the guy before prolly drew too much power on the old alternator from the sounds, ie. the original. bought a replacement..wrong one, couldnt find where to connect the vr, chopped the wires and went on his merry way... where it found its way ot you.
damn i should be a cop :D

I agree...it's very common to find evidence of ass-backward ways of fixing things on these cars...ie trapdoor. lol:crying:

haha yeah. and the worst part about it is that they never tell you when they sell it to you..so youre there trying to fix something that shouldnt be working in the first place..
things like those that make me wanna buy a brand new car.

My 95 Formula started doing the same thing this weekend (electrical gauge dropping low). I charged it overnight and started it. When measured with a meter, the battery voltage (12.83 volts) did not climb when the engine was started so I assume it is the alternator not working. What freaked me out is that the voltage gauge went way low almost immediately. I got out and checked it again. Inside of a minute the battery measured down to 12.02 volts, even though the battery had just been fully charged, and the engine sounded like it was starting to misfire so I shut it off after about 90 seconds. Makes me wonder if the battery is shot too? Everything was turned off while the engine was running, so why would the voltage drop so fast?
