Absolutely no past problems with this tranny.
Engine light comes on all appaers fine. Put about 200 miles around town on it with this engine light on. Short trip about 2 miles into it after setting 6 hrs and the vehicle just drops to an idle and will only move at an idle speed. Shut vehicle off for 15 minutes and it acts as if nothing occurred but engine light is still on. Generic code reader says Tranny Lock. Any suggestions??

Can't find "Tranny lock" in any of my code lists. What was the code? Any other codes? The first step after reading codes in just about any tranny problem is verify the fluid level is good. Next change the fluid and filter. I think the mileage schedule for that is every 30K miles. I wouldn't let the fact it's running good now detour you from it.
Make sure you use only ATF+4 fluid. Anything else can give you problems.

The code is what I was told by a shade tree mechanic who finished the sentence by saying it needs completely rebuilt. Apparently he took me for a fool. thanks for your advice. I ll post what I come up with later

You can use Dextron 3,but get a black bottle of lubegard. The black bottle of lubegard changes the dextron into the recomended mopar fluid.I believe you check the the fluid level in Nuetral, not in park.It says on the dipstick somewhere.I do put in the dextron with a black bottle of lubegard with no comebacks.Take it to a reliable transmission shop that knows what they are doing. That shade tree mechanic does not know this rule:If you cannot fix it, keep you hands off it.Another thing,do not do this to an automatic transmission:get it flushed.A flush is a big no no.All I hear are horror stories after a flush.I know a transmission shop that does valve body cleanings. If you want a flush, here is another way without the machine:remove the bottom line from the radatior or put a hose on one the transmission fittings on the transmission pointed to pan.Start pouring fluid until it is clear while the vehicle is running making sure you do not run the transmission dry.

Well got it hooked up to a decoder today and this is the results: 2 codes
OBDII
(1) P0740 " The PCM has determined that a malfunction exists in the electrical circuit for the torque converter clutch.
(2) P0700 "The PCM has received a signal to turn on the "malfunction indicator lamp" from the transmission control system.
Well I take it (1) is my issue and (2) is just a signal fom my car computer to have check engine light come on.
You think I should start with just cleaning electrical connections to the tranny? or does this look real serious and suggestions would be helpful thanks!
