1993 1500 4x4

today we had a nice bit of snow and I was out plowing with the truck,everything worked fine except for a single clunk when going from rev to forward,Im thinking I have a bad front universal from the transfer case to the diff.I went home and took off the plow and while backing out of the driveway(just idling back)the truck just stopped as if I had ran into a snow bank.I went forward no problem and then back again and it did the same thing I think the front and back wheels locked and skidded on the snow.I went forward and then back again and had no problem since,there isnt any noise while in 4wd on the road other than the extra drive shaft turning(and maybe a bad joint).I know a bad universal wont lock the wheels so something other than that caused it,also I was back up straight,any ideas??The truck seems to drive fine in 2 or 4 wd.

that looks like a fairly easy fix,but what are the symptoms of the broken snap ring?What does the snap ring do?It said something about a pump not working when it broke but I wasnt aware that the transfercase had a pump.

Usually low speed grinding sound along with a pop sound.

It can also cause the transfer case to lock up.

thanks for the info but mine dosent make any noise in 2WD,only happened in 4WD and it wasnt the noise it just locked in reverse for a sec but when I get the chance I will check it just to make sure.I need to heat the driveshaft bolts to get the shaft out,I tried this summer to replace the t-case seal but couldnt move the bolts.

Might be way off, but mine had a problem with the pinion nut on the rear end loosening up, causing the pinion to push into the ring while backing up, maybe your front diff. has the same problem?
