06 EVO IX RS vs. 06 STI

Was with friends at a get together the other day and was having conversations with a guy who owned a White 2006 STI (he was from San Diego). He had similiar mods to me and so I thought it would be a great time to test each others cars, and compare and contrast the differences

His 06 STI-
Catback Exhaust
Catless Down Pipe
Cold Air Intake
Blow Off Valve
Protune
289whp/326wtq (Dyno Jet)

vs.

My 06 EVO IX
Turboback Exhaust w/ Test Pipe
Drop In Air Filter
Manual Boost Controller
Fuel Pump
ECUFlash
309whp/305wtq (Dyno Jet)

Around 60mph roll-
I'm in third gear, and he pulls pretty hard, about 1 car, maybe a little more, then I start to reel him in 4th gear and by the top of 4th I am inching ahead.

40mph roll-
Second gear, and this time we stay neck and neck from the start, shift to third and start to pull a car, shift to 4th gear and I start to pull away. Probably had about 2 and half cars.

20mph roll-
I'm in second gear, and he pulls about half a car at the start, in third I even it out and start to pull, by the top of 4th gear I end off ahead by three cars .

Conclusion-
His STI really does pull pretty hard down low (torque), but up top my EVO really starts to pull. I believe the stock STI VF39 turbo just runs out of breath and just can't hang with the EVOs stock turbo. Also I believe he caught me a little off guard in the first race, didn't expect his car to pull that hard from the start. Also my mods cost me approx. $1,200 including my tune, he claimed to have paid around $2,300 for his, food for thought. Incase somebody says "his numbers are low", well so are mine. But yeah I'm pretty happy with my IX and the tune I got from Tunning Technologies, the best EVO shop in Southern California.

Good kill. From everything i've read on line the Evo responds better to mods then the STI. I believe it is primarily due to having a larger turbo, but i've also read that the Evo has stronger internals then the STI.

Buddy of mine just got a Evo IX. He just loves the handling of it.

Nice kill dude but, to be honest, as soon as I saw that you had a TBE on your Evo IX the outcome was a forgone conclusion. For the most part an IX with a 3" TBE is like an VIII with a 3" TBE and 264in/264ex cams. I have that setup and more on my '05 VIII RS and I haven't found an STi on the stock snail that could keep up. They're torque monsters but they hit a bit of a wall up top.

BTW...good, chronological, choices in mods. I can tell you've done your homework and/or have been given some good advice. It's depressing to see when "new FMIC" or "Buschur 02 housing" are the 1st few mods some new Evo owner settled on. What boost level are you running on the MBC and is it strictly a 91 octane tune?

Yeah it's strictly a 91 octane tune, but my numbers are kind of low at 309whp. Not sure if it is the dyno or just my car, but on the average EVO IXs only see 305whp to 325whp with similiar mods (maybe a couple of more mods) on Tuning Technologies dyno and 91 octane. So maybe it is the dyno, but I don't think my IX is as powerful as some other IXs, but it's cool, I love my IX. My mod selection is ok, but I have a buddy who spent $800 on mods on his IX and he walks me by a car, LOL.

Yeah your right the STi/STI is a torque monster, it's that extra displacement. But yeah the stock snail on the STi/STI just runs out of steam up top, advantage EVO. Not dissing the STi/STI, it's a great car, but bolt on to bolt on, the EVO VIII and especially the EVO IX pulls harder.

I am tempted to go to another dyno jet just to see what I put down, but I am finding a hard time justifying spending $80 to $100 just to spit out higher dyno numbers. I am not a fan of dyno racing.

I give the extra displacement of the STi/STI and others cars like the SRT-4, MazdaSpeed 3 and 6 a lot of credit, they are some torque monsters, and torque makes for a kick ass street ride in feel. But it's Horsepower in the end that wins races. I am very excited about the EVO X though, I know, I know, the 4G63 will be gone, but I believe the EVO X will keep the 16G turbo and have added bonus of extra displacement and MIVEC which in my opinion will make for a car that has great down low power and have killer top end power, especially when modded. In my opinion the EVO X will be the best EVO ever, but we will see in early Jan. when it is shown at the North American International Auto Show, hopefully they will finally release the specs on this car.

I wouldn't worry about dyno numbers. I was feeling inadequate about my 285whp/290wtq that I put down at Gruppe-S until I saw dyno plots of FP green STi's barely hitting 310whp and stock Dodge Vipers hitting 375whp. Then there was a dyno day and I was right at, or above, other comparably equipped Evos. I'm also running an Evo IX 16G turbo too. It's all relative really. What really matters is the power under the curve.

Mistubishi is making a return to WRC in '07 so I doubt the new Evo X engine will be larger than 2 liters...

I might be wrong though. I haven't been following all the rumors that closely. Who knows. Supposedly they're toying with some anti-lag technologies right now too. I think it's safe to say the next Evo will look more refined (inside and out), handle better, carry less curb weight, and put down in excess of 300hp. Oh and it will cost more too. :(

nice races. Next time try and get some videos. I think seeing those two line up would make for some very nice footage. congrats.

nice race....I LOVE the Evo9s....such a nice car.

I have no idea why subaru usa decided to chuck a VF39 into the sti....that's a dumb choice.

Dammit, send me over a JDM/AUDM bugeye STi Right_LiRrr. I want a bugeye so bad right now, they've really caught my eye lately, but those versions are so much better than what america offers. Plus I'd love a RHD.

I'm a little confused on the new STIs, they seem to make a little more power with bolt ons compared to the 04-05 STi. Somebody told me they were using the VF41, but I thought that was only for the new JDM STI, and the USDM still uses the VF39. I believe the VF39 and VF41 are nearly identical, but the VF39 dies out up top, while the VF41 flows better and makes better top end power? The way this STI ran, it seemed more like a VF39 in my opinion. I wish I could see his dyno sheet and compare it to mine, oh well. Anyways he mentioned bolting on a bigger turbo and is hoping for well over 300whp. I plan to go 02 Housing and Cams and I am hoping for atleast 330whp on Tuning Technologies dyno. Maybe we will race again, and I'll try to get it on tape. I asked for one of those in car video cameras for Christmas, maybe Santa will come through, LOL!

Naw I don't worry about dyno numbers too much, although I do wish I made a little more, it pains me a little when I see other IXs putting down 330whp with the same exact or sometimes less mods than me. A EVO IX just posted 348whp yesterday on evolutionm.net and he has slightly less mods than me. Oh well, still love my IX and the car runs great and feels very powerful.

Oh yeah in case people are wondering about the potential of these EVO IXs an EVO IX with very minimal mods (stock catback)-
drop in filter
3" downpipe
Ebay 02 housing
Helix test pipe
GSC 272 exhaust cam
Forge MBC
AMS LICP
Flash
100 Octane Gas

With these mods this EVO IX has ran a best time of 11.4@119mph (and that is less than $2,000 worth of mods). I don't have the 11.4@119MPH pass video, but here is a 11.6@117mph pass video he made-

I know man...if I could have my day again, I woulda got the MY02 STi, the first AUDM STi to come out with the 6 speed. So nice. Of course the Japs had to pull one better on us and come out with the special edition S202 STi....man!!

Some pics: as you can see, the STi bugeyes come with the projector headlights, which imo looks a lot better than the WRX ones cos they're much darker and look more aggressive. The S202 carbon fibre wing suits the whole look well as well...I think they'll probably be the last mods i'll do to my car once i get the suspension done....but then again, i can't justify spending about $1600 just for cosmetics....unless someone smashes their MY02 STi and I can get the headlights off them for cheap :p

As with the turboes in the STi's as far as I know, the USDM STi's come with the tiny ass VF39s (tiny for a VF series IHI that is). The Aussie ones come with VF34, which is a bit bigger than the VF39. I believe the MY06 JDM STi's are still using the 2L forged piston engine from the old STi's and running VF34s.

However, the JDM has so many special edition STi's....makes me soo jealous. All their special edtion ones e.g. S203/S204, Spec C Type RA-R are running twin scroll turboes with titanium turbines and shafts e.g. VF 38, VF42....I mean just look at what the JDM is getting in MY06

Special edition S204 (love the carbon fibre front lip)

Spec C Type RA-R

I think the point I'm trying to make it....the JDM is just a wet dream, it's not only their STi's are better and come with more choice, but their evos are a lot better too.

Yup, I'm just jealous is all.

Nice run. I love my STi and still think it was the right choice vs. the Evo VIII, but if I had to buy one right now I would buy the Evo IX hands down.
