This Mom Doesn't know what To Do? help

My son has a 93 f-150 with the small v-8 and it's automatic. Every two weeks or so the pickup floods and won't start. After it sits a while we can hold the pedal to the floor and it will sputter and start and blow tons of black smoke out. We go drive it out on the highway till it starts running smooth. All works good for another two weeks.

My husband can't fix it so any ideas would be appreciated!

sounds like the fuel pump is running when it is not soposed to. Have you guys looked or replace that yet? Also start with cheep stuff first, like fuel filter.

I do know for a fact that the fuel pump and the fuel filter were changed this summer!

If you have an auto zone there, see if they will run the trouble codes for you. They used to do it no charge. That may give you an idea where to start. Here are a few things to check. Pull the spark plugs and mark which cylinders they came out of. Look at the color of them, are they all black about the same color, or are 1 or more darker than the rest? If only 1 , or a couple are dark, could be injector problems on those cylinders. If theyre all the same color, check the throttle position sensor, fuel pressure regulator(especially the vacumn line going to it for cracks) , coolant temp sensor, and maybe the map sensor, but that doesnt sound like the problem. If you dont have a book on it, you can get a Haynes, or Chiltons manual for around 15$. It will give you details on how to check the components, and also how to read the trouble codes. The test procedures are fairly detailed to type here. Also, next time it does it, check for a good hot spark at the plugs. You can also go to auto zones web site, and look at the vehicle repair guides. They have basically the same info that the Chilton/Haynes manuals do.

That is a good sugesstion except In 93, Trucks did not have Indepent Fuel Injection. They used throttle body Fuel injection. Which means there was a 2 injectors that sit where the carb use to be into the intake manifold. The intake manifold would mix the air and fuel into the valves and into the cylinders. If the Manifold is dirty, the fuel and air will not mix properly and have a hard time starting. I would Take some throttle body cleaner and use spray that into the throttle body.

The other thing it could be is the timing Chain.. It may need to be replaced.

Nothing wrong with cleaning the throttle body, as it can cause poor low speed performance, but its not causing this flooding problem i dont think. General Motors still used throttle body injection in 1993 i believe, but ford to my knowledge never used it on trucks. Ford came out with Multi Port Fuel Injection in 1986 on the 6 and 8 cyl engines, in vans and trucks, and have used it since. They also used Sequential Fuel injection which was basically the same, except it fired the injectors differently. They used throttle body injection on some cars.

I have had ford fuel pump relays stick but this will usually run down the battery.
Spray around the intake manifold with carb cleaner. If the manifold is leaking it will smooth out.
